Introducing Garance Bray (b. 1997) @garancebray , a French artist based in London with a background in anthropology.

Her work begins with the body: its tensions, intimacies, and quiet negotiations with power. Using consistently overhead viewpoints and enlarged formats, she pushes the viewer to step into one of her characters, to share its secrets and implications. She invites us to stay close to what resists clarity, entering moments of intensity and discomfort, attraction and ambiguity. The body becomes a surface that contains history, and the marks she leaves, its narrative.

Her practice is a sustained exploration of embodied relations. She explores what escapes, spills over, or resists being pinned down. Garance’s paintings create a space where unspoken or unseen parts of experience can emerge in a messy and lively way, where desire and fear intersect.

“My paintings are about exposing what exists beneath an image: the emotional temperature, the violence that hides in banality, and the stories held in skin.”
