Woven mixed media

𝘉𝘈𝘚𝘜𝘙𝘈, a Spanish and Tagalog word meaning “garbage”, “trash”, or “rubbish”.

This warp and weft of human impact is a woven reflection of the Anthropocene; the human-altered earth as a complex textile. It binds plastic waste woven with natural fibres and traces of native xanthorrhoea grass.

The wave of deliberate, handworked layers highlight how synthetic polymers now weave permanently into a geological strata, known as ‘technofossils’.

“As high tides and storm surges erode the landfill deposits at East Tilbury, sheet plastics dumped in the 1980s emerge from the low receding cliffs, to be swept out onto the river and eventually out to sea. Such modern forms of plastic are found only in the upper layers. Lower layers contain earlier forms of plastic such as bakelite. In fact this landfill, started in the late nineteenth century, may comprise a stratigraphic record of almost the entire history of plastics.”
