Thank you to @slaymodelsla

Recently, I have been exploring the economic value of care and how the provision of care disproportionately falls on the shoulders of women.

I started by reading Deficit: The Hidden Value of Care by Emma Holten, an excellent book that provides an introduction to this space of social and economic study. I'm currently working through Wages for Housework: The Feminist Fight Against Unpaid Labor, which has been just as consciousness raising while also providing a historical recount of a fight that has been going on far longer than most of us ever know.

Learning about this "blind spot" in economics truly colors in so much of the why behind the global phenomenon of falling birthrates.

Why would a woman want to give up participation in fully recognized and compensated forms of labor that provide her financial independence now, in the form of a paycheck, AND in the future, in the form of retirement savings?

Think of all the forms of care that are economically considered "unproductive" and therefore undeserving of monetary compensation, yet fall disproportionately into the hands of women: pregnancy, childbirth, childrearing, and household management in the form of cleaning, budgeting, human relations, and yes, including managing the temperaments of male partners.

Work that is related to the home or occurs in the home considered "unproductive." Economies historically, and in their current forms, depend on women providing this labor for free, out of "love," and essentially as welfare to society.

This status quo leaves women financially dependent on a male partner whose work IS considered "productive" and deserving of monetary compensation. This dependence gives the "working" man a great degree of power over the financially dependent woman.

In the event of a separation, the woman disproportionately incurs the losses from having provided that unpaid labor: the time and energy spent maintaining the home, as well as being pregnant and raising children. Let's not forget the irreversible physical damage, traumatic experience, and changes that can come as the price of delivering a child, thereby providing the economy with a future member of the workforce.
