What could be more Autumnal than Apple & blackberry crumble ? Tonight we’re having it with custard. Wouldn’t have been my first choice but never mind 😂😂
It was labelled as a rhubarb and ginger but l obviously got mixed up when l was making a big batch of crumbles for the freezer.

A few bits and bobs still being harvested. The carrots aren’t too bad ,the cos lettuce still producing fresh tasty leaves, while the bush tomatoes are still producing lots of cherry toms, which I ripen on the windowsill at home. Sadly the beetroots were disappointing this year.
Never mind, I’m just browsing through the latest National Allotment Society’s 2027 seed catalogue. There’s always hope for next year. 😃😃
And a £50 cheque paid for first prize for my photograph in this year’s Welsh Allotment Society competition isn’t to be sniffed at either.

Dahlia love. I gave them another feed this afternoon so hopefully they’ll keep blooming until the frosts arrive (if they do).

What a lovely surprise to have won a photographic competition organised by National Allotment Society for Wales. I entered about 4 categories including Wildlife on the Plot.

The baking was a success l made an Apricot & Lemon curd crumble topped loaf and a gorgeous Raisin & Courgette cake. Straight forward enough . It was the Bonne Maman lemon curd jar that ended in my injury. I ALWAYS tap the edge of a tight lid which eases its opening. But this was a stubborn one and as l was alone and wanting to get on with things, l finally grabbed it with my left hand and gave it an almighty twist with the right.
It was hours later that I realised I’d “gone and done it again” , spraining tendons in both wrists but the right one in particular. It’s not swollen (even if it looks like it in the support bandage)
Ice packs, Coolgel and ibuprofen for a couple of days l think. Pissed off. ☹️☹️

It was a RAINY DAY !! Hwrê ! So I baked.

After swapping some runner beans for a courgette with a fellow plot holder, here’s what I did with said green vegetable. (NB the pathetically small yellow courgette in the photo is one of mine, standing in for the green one that went into the cake 😉)
It’s called FLORA’S FAMOUS COURGETTES CAKE.
A recipe by Flora Woods who worked in Harrods Waterstone’s and gave the recipe to Nigella Lawson. I wasn’t 100% convinced that a courgette cake would work but l was reasonably confident in Nigella’s recipes and reassured that if carrot cake works then why shouldn’t courgette? It’s just an adaptation. The filling is lemon & lime curd.

The best part of having an allotment is - vegetable swaps !

My courgettes are dismal (the yellow ones , no thicker or longer than a finger 😂) so I swapped my surplus dwarf French beans and runner beans for a really good size courgette with a fellow gardener. Win-win 🙌🏻 🙌🏻

A few really sweet ripe strawberries , some onions and 2 Cos lettuce , which survived the heatwave and didn’t show any sign of bolting. They’re also sweet and crisp.
Plus a bag of apples.
Not bad at all.

The simple things in life. I took a walk down the lane and found 2 objects of beauty - a peacock butterfly (sadly expired, (not sure how or why) but loved seeing the markings at close quarters. Then a beautiful feather l believe was from a tawny owl 🦉 .
Well there’s been plenty of hooting in those woods nearby so a few feathers were probably shed during their preening activities.

And I’m so pleased with the results of having given my dahlias some extra feed (they’re hungry feeders apparently) . I grew some scented stocks this year and they’re a definite must for next summer.
I’ve been so sick & fed up lately of all things technological, bloody AI, intrusive internet advertising popping up all over the place… l find simplicity a welcome space.

To see the mountains on the mainland as clear as this from Anglesey usually means something significant : yes, they’re beautiful and you feel as though you could touch them. But rain is certain to follow.

However, they’ve been clear like this for weeks now. And the certain rain hasn’t been much at all..😢
So I’m hoping the mackerel skies are a better natural weather forecaster. Who knows any more 🤷‍♀️ 🐟 ☁️ 🌧️ 🙏
