This area is a xeric, water-limited coastal desert where plants persevere under strong selective pressure for drought tolerance, heat tolerance, salt tolerance and adaptations to sporadic water availability.

-Hot arid desert climate (BWh, Köppen) with strong influence from subtropical high-pressure zones.
-Low and irregular annual rainfall occurs only a few days per year, often associated hurricanes, leaving long periods of drought.
