SELF-SUFFICIENCY ON JUST 1/2 ACRE? Yes, it’s totally doable — and here’s how to make it thrive!

With intentional planning, even a half-acre lot can support a productive, self-reliant homestead that feeds your family, builds resilience, and connects you to the land.

Here's what fits on 1/2 acre:

🥬 Vegetable Garden — 2,000 sq ft

🌽 Staple Crops — 2,000 sq ft

🍑 Fruit Trees & Berries — 1,000 sq ft

🌿 Herb & Medicinal Garden — 200 sq ft

🐐 Livestock Area — 1,000 sq ft

🌱 Greenhouse & Cold Frames — 500 sq ft

♻️ Composting & Soil Building — 500 sq ft

💧 Water Catchment & Storage — 300 sq ft

🔋 Energy & Fuel Area — 480 sq ft

🛠 Tools, Storage, and Shelters — 800 sq ft

🌳 Paths, Shade, Woodlot & Flex Space — 2,500 sq ft

🏡 House & Driveway — ~10,500 sq ft

Each element supports the others — from nutrient cycling and water storage to pollinator support and food preservation. The result? A holistic, harmonious system right in your backyard.
