LA’s Garment Industry is the largest garment manufacturing hub in the United States. The second largest is New York City. Last year, the City of New York approved a rezoning plan that included significant support for their local garment industry such as; a campaign and website to elevate local manufacturers and creative entrepreneurs, 1.8 million in public and private funding to support designers and garment manufacturers; $50 million to help nonprofit organizations develop permanent, below-market space for the garment industry; and a dedicated point person from New York City Economic Development Corporation to support the continued vitality of the Garment District.Many of these programs mirror the Garment and Fashion Industry Pilot Program that the Garment Worker Center and business allies have advocated for over the past 3 years. Most union T-shirts aren’t actually union made!And because of that, we’re inviting unions across the country to commit to turning out at least 1% of their membership in union-made shirts for Labor Day 2026.One percent.If unions across the country meet that goal together, we could generate one of the largest coordinated union-made apparel actions in modern labor history.Each participating organization commits to:-ordering union-made SolidariTees produced by Dignity Apparel-turning out at least 1% of their members at a Labor Day event or labor action in their area(Of course, many unions may choose to go beyond 1%.)My AFT-MI local has about 1,500 members. One percent would mean just 15 people. GWC seeks a dedicated, community-centered staff attorney for our Legal Clinic. The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing labor and employment legal assistance to garment workers, including in wage claims through the CA Labor Commission and investigations through the CA Bureau of Field Enforcement. The Staff Attorney will work with GWC Organizers on Know Your Rights training curriculum and materials for workers, and will support GWC’s advocacy efforts for stronger labor enforcement.
