🐸 Frenar una carretera no es estar contra el desarrollo... pero extinguir una especie sí lo es. ¡Buenas noticias de los #DerechosdelaNaturaleza! El sapo arlequín jambato de Ecuador fue declarado extinto en 2004 y redescubierto en 2016. Hoy, la única población silvestre conocida en el mundo sobrevive en una sola microcuenca en la provincia de Cotopaxi, con una estimación de entre 92 y 359 individuos 🥺 Ahora, una jueza de esa región ordenó suspender la ampliación de una carretera para proteger a este pequeño sapo, aplicando el principio de precaución y la Constitución ecuatoriana, que reconoce los Derechos de la Naturaleza 🌿✅ Esto es lo que implica hacer cumplir esos derechos. Our first-ever official presence at London Climate Action Week 2026, and what a week it was! 🌍 Eight events across five days, alongside partners including @letterstotheearth_, @movement.rights, @earthlawcenter, @wecan_intl, @antarctic_rights, @synchearth, and more: a water ceremony at Shakespeare’s Globe, a global consultation launching the Antarctica Declaration, testimony from Panama to Argentina to Germany on what it takes to defend Nature under pressure, a screening on Ecuador’s Los Cedros ruling, and a river in Wales and England that now has its own Charter of Rights. We came to a space where the Rights of Nature is still taking root in the UK and Europe, and we’re leaving with new relationships across the movement here. This is only the beginning. 🇪🇨 Rights of Nature news: An Ecuadorian court has ordered the revocation of 17 mining concessions in the Ortega River basin after ruling that mining activities violated the Rights of Nature [Español abajo] The first-instance judgment found that mining operations proceeded without prior consultation and caused environmental damage, including heavy metal contamination in the river's waters. The court ordered the revocation of the mining concessions, the removal of mining machinery, environmental restoration measures, and appointed the Intercultural Community of Ortega Alto as the legal guardian of the Ortega River, giving the community the responsibility to monitor, protect, and guide the river's ecological recovery. The Ortega River basin lies in a high-biodiversity transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon, within the Podocarpus–El Cóndor Biosphere Reserve. The case was brought by the Intercultural Community of Ortega Alto with legal support from the Federación Saraguro de Zamora Chinchipe, following concerns over mining impacts and the lack of prior consultation. ________ 🇪🇨 Un juez de Ecuador ordenó revocar 17 concesiones mineras en la cuenca del río Ortega tras determinar, en primera instancia, que las actividades mineras vulneraron los Derechos de la Naturaleza. La sentencia concluyó que las concesiones fueron otorgadas sin consulta previa, libre e informada y que las operaciones provocaron contaminación por metales pesados y otros daños ambientales. Además de revocar las concesiones, el fallo ordena el retiro de la maquinaria minera, la reparación de los daños ambientales y reconoce a la Comunidad Intercultural Ortega Alto como guardiana legal del río Ortega, con la responsabilidad de velar por su protección, monitoreo y restauración ecológica. La cuenca del río Ortega se encuentra en una zona de transición entre los Andes y la Amazonía, dentro de la Reserva de Biósfera Podocarpus-El Cóndor. La acción fue presentada por la Comunidad Intercultural Ortega Alto con el acompañamiento legal de la Federación Saraguro de Zamora Chinchipe, tras denunciar los impactos de la minería y la ausencia de consulta previa. by @garnglobal

🌳🇨🇦 Rights of Nature news: First municipality in Canada recognizes trees as living beings with rights [Español abajo] On June 9, the municipal council of Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Quebec, unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing trees' rights to life, natural growth, integrity, and regeneration. The municipality also became the first in Canada and Quebec to endorse the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Tree. The resolution commits the town to review its bylaws to strengthen tree protection, require replacement when trees must be removed, and expand the local tree canopy through future planting initiatives. The initiative was developed by the Terrasse-Vaudreuil Environmental Committee, inspired by filmmaker André Desrochers' documentary Des arbres et des arts, and supported by the International Observatory of Nature Rights. _______ 🌳🇨🇦 ¡Primer municipio en Canadá en reconocer a los árboles como seres vivos con derechos! El 9 de junio, el concejo municipal de Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Quebec, aprobó por unanimidad una resolución que reconoce el derecho de los árboles a la vida, al crecimiento natural, a la integridad y a la regeneración. Además, el municipio se convirtió en el primero de Canadá y Quebec en adherir a la Declaración Universal de los Derechos del Árbol. La resolución compromete al municipio a revisar sus reglamentos para fortalecer la protección de los árboles, reemplazarlos cuando deban ser removidos y ampliar la cobertura arbórea mediante nuevas iniciativas de plantación. “We need not become Indigenous... (we need) to remember what our ancestors knew, to recover our relation to this land and belong.” Those words from Indigenous Ponca Nation Elder Casey Camp-Horinek was a defining moment in our Rights of Nature in Action panel during London Climate Action Week. The Rights of Nature movement in the UK rests on decades and centuries of struggle, much borne by Indigenous peoples internationally, defending the rights of nature. As the movement grows - with 15 UK councils now passing River Rights motions and more than 50 groups connected through the River Rights Network - the challenge is clear: How do we grow in ways that stay true to the values this movement comes from?
