I dont make these kinds of posts very often but I had to after the chess match we had tonight.

Towards the end of this cold snap in Oklahoma the ponds are still frozen, forcing the ducks to feed in the fields and use any open water they can find.

I found 200 ducks in a field that had a small spring runoff with a little bit of open water in it right next to a completely frozen cattle pond a couple of days ago. Overnight the feed built from 200 to 800 ducks.

After watching it for one more day to figure out exactly what the ducks were doing we decided to hunt it setting up on the creek, that is no wider than my truck.

We hunted this evening and watched 500 ducks in the first two hours setup with the wind, never allowing us to pull the trigger. After moving the blinds, and spread two different times we moved 80 yards to the south east to the edge of a frozen pond bank to see how the birds would react to us hunting as if the pond was not frozen. Sure enough that was the ticket, we made quick work and shot 21 ducks in the last 45 minutes of shooting light, decoying mallards at 20 yards over a completely frozen pond, as if the pond was completely thawed out.

We may not have shot the 80 stack I expected, but at the end of the day we won, we definitely needed it, and boy did it feel good. I love duck hunting. by @garrett.cheek
