Today is a BIG day for 2 reasons..it’s been 100 days since my ACL knee surgery AND IT WAS MY FIRST DAY BACK TO SURF! It was an emotional surf session for me. I’ve been giving my everything to rehab but it started off as a major struggle, mostly because my body wouldn’t take to pain killer drugs. It was a hellish 3 weeks after the surgery of constant pain and no sleep (more on this later and alllll the crazy alternative solutions I tried). Then today happened..I actually wasn’t sure if I’d try to surf and pop up. I’ve been paddling out but just to touch ocean, keep my paddle strength up, and push the kids into waves. I had said that I would wait for a bigger day and take out my long board because similar to snowboarding, I think surfing is weird in that it’s easier to pop up on big waves than small..more power and steepness and umph to push you. Well the forecast said 5-6+ and zero wind. I paddled out with my knee brace strapped on but no expectations or pressure..and when the glorious wave came right my way i simply started to paddle and when it was time to pop up it honestly wasn’t a decision but just instinct that kicked in. Next thing I knew I was flying down the wave..ALL THE EMOTIONS! /// Special thanks to my surgeon @doctor.masi and @drjoshredd and @healingplaybook for helping me get here. This special moment on @berryislandlodge is dedicated to the amazing musician singing this lovely song about Bucket Lists : Her name is @elle_bean_music and I had the wonderful honor of meeting Elle in person when she attended one of our meetups in Florida last year. She is from England and I believe she was about 15 when we met. I remember her well because she was so so humble and sweet and honestly super nervous to tell me that she likes to make music. I asked her to be brave, publish her music, and send me a link when she does. We’ll flash forward to today and she sent me this song!! Dear @elle_bean_music, you are so so talented. First polar plunge of our visit to @berryislandlodge !!🥶!! Something extra special about this video..I feel like up until this point Garrett was big strong dad helping his little girl do brave things. Now, Garrett is feeling old and broken (injured knee) and Dorothy becoming so big and strong! ❤️💙💚 I told Garrett it might not be a good idea on his injured recovering leg but he says it’s ice bath therapy ACL recovery..😉 taken in Berry Island Lodge - Farewell Harbour by @garrettgee

Most of us do not lose our closest friendships all at once. We just slowly stop making them a priority until one day we look up and realize we are lonely in a way we cannot quite explain.

Garrett Gee said something on the No Magic Pill podcast that I think every person in their thirties, forties, and fifties needs to hear. The people who knew you as a child are not just friends. They are medicine. Not therapy in the clinical sense. Medicine in the most literal sense. When Garrett gets together with his two closest childhood friends they stop being adults entirely. They goof off, joke around, and play like they are kids again. Nobody else in your life can do that for you. Not your spouse, not your colleagues, not the friends you make at work or at the gym. The people who knew you before you had anything to prove are the ones who remind you who you actually are underneath all of it.

I have felt the loneliness that comes from letting those friendships slide. And I have also felt what happens when you invest in them again. There is nothing like it.

It always comes back to priorities. Not what you say you care about. What you actually make time for.

For our family, football has been a global language that has allowed us to connect with cultures around the world!! Personally, i am NOT ready for the World Cup to be over. I have loved obsessing over the tournament, the teams, the players, and especially just seeing on social media the way different nations were bonding and coming together. I loved the quote : “the World Cup is like a sleepover with your cousins who you love but your parents hate each other” hahah too true. So to my cousins/brothers/sisters around the world in Scotland, Egypt, Iran, Belgium, USA, and everywhere else, I LOVE YOU! And to Argentina, good luck. And to Spain, GOOOD LUCKKK!! ;) taken in NYC by @garrettgee

Had such a great conversation with @garrettgee from @thebucketlistfamily on No Magic Pill.

We talked about mental health, family, business, and what it really means to build a life around adventure, presence, and the people you love most.

Garrett has taken his family around the world, but what stood out to me most was not just the travel.

It was the intention behind it.

The way he thinks about time.

The way he thinks about his kids.

The way he thinks about building a business that supports the life he wants to live, instead of the other way around.

So many of us chase freedom for years.

Garrett is one of those people who reminds you that freedom is not just something you earn someday.

It is something you choose, design, and protect along the way.

Grateful for this conversation.

If im being honest with myself, I was definitely not excited when I found out I’d be on a little scooter after knee surgery. Just such a bummer not to feel like my full capable self. A bummer but also a major life lesson. Looking for to the silver lining..it was a new perspective for me to be following my wife and kids around from behind. It was quite the heartwarming experience to have a front row seat and witness the special relationship @jessgee has with each of our kids.
