I am incredibly honored and excited to announce that I have been selected as the 2026 Artist-in-Residence for the historic University Club of Portland! This is a milestone moment for my artistic journey, and I am so grateful for the support from each of you that has brought me to this point. Founded in 1898, the University Club embraces the spirit of Portland as a premier private city club, offering fine dining and a full calendar of social and professional events. Its Artist-in-Residence program is a vital part of its commitment to culture and community. The University Club’s Artist-in-Residence program, established in 2008, is designed to enrich the Club community and provide Northwest artists like myself a platform to connect with a new audience in a meaningful way. So, what does this mean? Throughout 2026, my work will be displayed prominently throughout the Club’s beautiful, historic facility. More than just an exhibition, this is an immersive residency. I’ll have the opportunity to exhibit new works, offer workshops, and show Club members’ works in progress, and engagein the creative process. But beyond the art itself, I am most looking forward to the opportunity to build community. This residency grants me full membership, and I genuinely cannot wait to make new friends, enjoy interesting conversations over meals, and become part of the Club’s vibrant social fabric. It’s a chance to grow, to be inspired by new perspectives, and to share my artistic journey in a deeply integrated way. Thank you, as always, for being on this journey with me. Your encouragement means the world. I look forward to sharing updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and new work inspired by this experience throughout the year. So I’ve been trying to develop a looser, more neo-expressionist, mark-making style… damn it is harder than it looks. I tend towards a plan and then as things unfold I loosen up and get improvisational. Nothing wrong with that but always curious what's possible.But In the end this current work demanded hundreds and hundreds of labor intensive dots! 🤪You can’t fight what the painting “wants.” right? If ya know ya know ya know?But when it’s done I think it’s gonna be super cool! 😎 by @garrickpaints

All these years and I still dither over starting a painting. I have such a strong vision of what I think I want. I guess I delay because the minute I start - the painting can’t help but become something else. But that’s also a good thing! Once I apply paint to panel what the painting wants to become reveals its self. Often this leads to unexpected directions and pleasant surprises! But it can also be nerve racking 🤪 ### by @garrickpaints

I had a huge “Ah-Ha!” moment when seeing the sprawling collection of Hockney’s work courtesy of the @schnitzercollection currently on display @portlandartmuseum Hockney was incredibly prolific. Much will be written about his ability to “see” and sometimes quietly skewer American culture. But as an artist, what I admired most, was his almost improvisational act of creation. Hockey didn't treat the creation of art as precious!If he wanted to make a huge painting he'd rip 10 sheets of paper from a standard pad of paper, stitch them together and start painting! He created and put the act of creating front and center and let it fly! Because of this I am trying to loosen up my approach to creating because of Mr. Hockey. An inspirational and admirable artist. 🙏♥️⏩⏩⏩ SLIDE #3 Is my hand down favorite piece in the collection. 🥰 by @garrickpaints
