When we talk about passion, we think of Åke. Throughout his lifetime, he developed more than 200 chair models, constantly learning, testing, refining, and starting again until every detail was right. For Åke, craftsmanship was never an end in itself, but a way to make chairs better, more efficient, sustainable, and purposeful. He studied what came before him, building on centuries of knowledge, from the earliest chairs of ancient Egypt to the evolution of furniture design. This pragmatic approach became part of the foundation of what Gärsnäs is today and continues to shape how we think, design, and build.

A memory from Engarn

Around this time last year, Åke welcomed Shinichiro Ogata into his home in Engarn. A meaningful meeting between two dedicated individuals, shaped by their respective cultures, offering insight into the importance of sharing perspectives and learning from one another.

The conversation centered on responsibility, craftsmanship, and their mutual respect for nature.

At the heart of their meeting was the NOMAD collection, originally designed by Åke in the 1970s, a body of work that embodies his vision of honest, functional, and timeless design.

From this encounter, the NOMAD × OGATA Special Edition was born: a collection reimagined through dialogue, crafted with mutual respect for both cultures, and dedicated to quiet, functional design.
