Delphine is two-and-a-half years old and expressive as heck. Imagine, behind the heart filter I’ve used to hide her face, eyes that are jacked with wonder, as though every detail of this effort of mine is a joy of hers.

I recorded this in March after receiving author copies of WHO ELSE IN THE DARK HEADED THERE, my newly published second book of poetry.

I encourage you to order it from your local bookstore of choice, or you can order it from the publisher through the link in bio. by @garthmartens

Some news. I have a new book of poetry forthcoming this April. It’s called Who Else in the Dark Headed There. I’m grateful it will soon be in the world, though for a while I wasn’t sure I wanted it to exist.

A mother disappears. A son struggles to make sense of the life she left behind. Set against the stark northern Alberta of the 1980s and 90s, Who Else in the Dark Headed There follows a man reaching through time to find the child he was and the father he is becoming.

Beneath this waking world is another world, of the overheard, of the unsaid. To enter is to find a lyricism finely wrought and hallucinatory, a depth of feeling and fidelity to metaphor in all its guises—but most of all an urgent relationship with language. Here, in a reconstruction of childhood’s rooms, Garth Martens approaches the past not as a record but as a pressure, a “muscled concentration” that reorders, resuscitates, and redoubts.

You’ll find it in bookstores on April 14. You can also preorder it, right now, either through my publisher or your local indie bookstore of choice: link in bio, etc.

I’ll read from it this spring and summer:
• March 27 — Vancouver (SFU Library)
• April 10 — Victoria (with Planet Earth Poetry & The Malahat Review)
• April 14 — Kelowna (launch)
• April 30 — Victoria (launch)
• August 16/17 — Cumberland (with Cascadia Poetry Festival)

Details soon.

If you’re a reviewer or bookseller, and would like an advance copy, send Biblioasis a message!

“Poems of intense emotion, the torque on the language extreme—as it must be, reaching this far into the dark, this honestly.”
—Jan Zwicky

A new poem of mine, PALMAS, is a finalist for the Montreal International Poetry Prize. The piece comes out of my nineteen-year study of flamenco, and it’s a companion piece to DOESN’T LOOK FAR, another flamenco poem of mine that you can find online at Hawkeye Magazine. by @garthmartens

Today, September 26, is the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists.
Last September, Canadian Writers for Palestine released this Open Letter, to decry the systemic murder of members of the press by the israeli regime. I share it again today. The deaths have not stopped.

We stand with Palestinian journalists, the bravest on the planet.
We condemn their killings by the Israeli state as war crimes.
Each paid with their life, for another to have the truth.
Our names bear witness to theirs.

Join me on Sunday, September 13, for a three-hour poetry workshop in which we’ll explore duende, dream logic, shadow substance, and how to allow associative leaps in the poem.

We’ll explore night consciousness through discussion, close reading of published poems or essays, and in-class writing exercises. At minimum, night consciousness allows a deepening of the lyric moment and escape from the rational mind. At maximum? Something dangerous enters from within the gaps.

We will talk, briefly, of the ghazal, a form the poet John Thompson says is like “discovering an alien design, illogical and without sense — a chart of the disorderly, against false reason and the tacking together of poor narratives. It is the poem of contrasts, dreams, astonishing leaps... ‘drunken and amatory’.”

Poets whose work we may look at include Tomas Transtromer, César Vallejo, Vasko Popa, Octavio Paz, Jan Zwicky, Dionne Brand, Robert Bly, Ali Blythe, Louise Gluck, John Newlove, Anne-Marie Turza, Canisia Lubrin, Melanie Siebert, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Natalie Diaz, Charles Wright, Antonio Machado, Louise Erdritch, Jack Gilbert, Franz Wright, Xi Chuan, Robert Hass, Eavan Boland, Alice Oswald, Sylvia Legris, Robert Bringhurst, Louise Halfe, and others.

The workshop will be held in person at the Intrepid Theatre Hub.

Seats are limited. To learn more, and to register, check out the link in my bio. taken in Intrepid Theatre by @garthmartens

I’m really pleased to see this poem, “Nothing But Glass, Snow,” online for folks to read, especially at @unlikely.stories.

This poem is a kind of rupture at the centre of my new book, Who Else in the Dark Headed There (@biblioasispublishing, 2026).
