I met William Coupon in 1979 at New York’s Mudd Club, where he was exhibiting a series of portraits of the club’s patrons—both famous and infamous. I would argue that no photographer captured the spirit of the Lower East Side punk scene more authentically than William. We became friends then and remained so until his passing on May 29, 2026, at the age of 73.

William’s stark, painterly portraits helped define the visual language of contemporary photography. From New York’s downtown underground to iconic images of Miles Davis and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and later to his powerful portraits of Indigenous peoples around the world, William brought dignity, curiosity, and an uncompromising eye to every subject.

A lifelong New Yorker who made his home in Santa Fe in recent years, William leaves behind an extraordinary body of work and countless friends who will miss him dearly. by @garydjohns
