What y'all know about the Willesden Dodgers' "Jive Rythm Trax" ? 🔊

This Friday I'm playing Montreuil, and I've met so many talented dancers in that city over the years I just had to post this up.

To me, this cut is the the purest expression of what street-level electro is all about. 💯

A big phat minor chord, a crunchy drum machine, a 'showdown' beat-switch, and most importantly, THEM CLAPS ! 👏

That's that tracksuit-wearin', train-bombin', boombox blarin' thang. 💣

Slide 1 was shot earlier this year at the crazy UBU gig (more on that later), and I had the honor to have the homie @jeffwooping bust some moves in the booth.

Jeff is a brother of mine and is the definition of a funkateer -- an amazing dancer and an impeccable DJ - plus, ain't no matchin' his shirt game. 👔

Slide 2 was last year at the infamous 101 Club, which was truly a special night for many reasons (if you know, you know.) 🙌

As I was talkin' with the @danza_autoriza crew on the phone, we agreed electro-funk beats can be challenging to pull off amidst a sea of safe 4x4 stomps - but that's exactly why I like to bring it back to basics and jam this barebones classic when the time is right. 🥁

One of my fondest memories on this tune was rockin' it in an afternoon jam in Montreuil actually - suddenly, two OG cats wearing matching Run DMC-type hats came out the back and did a crazy mirror routine, following the beat variations as I was workin' the groovebox. 🎩🎩

I wish I could have some videos of this - but some moments are forever burned in your brain.

'Treuilmon en force' 🤘

Humbled to be invited back in Montreuil by the super fresh crew @danza_autoriza Friday, April 17th at @lechinoismontreuil 🙏

And there's three reasons 'bout that:

One - it's awesome to see some new crews poppin' up on the scene with the type of grassroot ethics that are actually underground.
Nothing fancy or fake - just throwin' down with honest-to-goodness passion for the music & the dancing - this is what I like to see. ✊

Two - I've always loved Montreuil (Eastern Paris suburb) and actually lived at Croix-De-Chavaux for a couple years - where the club I'm gonna play is located.
It's one of the very few cities that is still trying to resist parisian gentrification - I've played there many times over the years, and the vibe of this place cannot be duplicated. ☝

Three - I mean, just look at this damn flyer already.👀
I'm honored to receive the pen sketch treatment - you know that's when things be gettin' real.

I'll tune my live set to be extra rugged for this one - but it ain't no playing the '93' without the Funk, so that'll be in there too for sure. 💣

This Saturday I'm playing the @travelling.festival.rennes at the @uburennes ,
and this year's edition is dedicated to Los Angeles. 🎦

If you talkin' L.A., independent cinema,
and synths ?

You gotta talk about John Carpenter.

His second movie is a masterpiece and one of my alltime faves. It was entirely shot in South Central and its massive synth soundtrack was groundbreaking. 💥

I've sampled dialogue from it on my 2019 album, and I've played many clubs across Europe with a treasured, DIY-cut shirt of the film's poster.

The idea of starting from something as classic as 1956's "Rio Bravo" with a shoestring budget - yet making it feel gritter and punchier is a major influence on the way I try to approach music.

When I got the gig the first thing on my mind was:

"I'm gonna do a badass electro version of "Assault" as a tribute to a cinema legend." 🫡

I'll be rocking this among a few other reworked L.A. cuts -- and I also got a
ton of unreleased stuff as well. 🔊

I can't wait to bang the box at the UBU, so see y'all there, and as Austin Stalker's character says:
"To The Death !" ✊

Street Thunder comin' your way y'all ⚡

Humbled to bring some Gritness to @fauxpoly with my remix of @kassiansound "Hollow" for their Remix 004 compilation ! 🙏

When Joe & Warren reached out, I apologized that I just couldn't use their stems because y'all know I'm on that strictly analog-style thing.

It was very fun to lift some of the musical elements from their original and dip 'em into the electro-grits, so to speak. ⚡

The result was this raw, 9-minute workout, with some added street-level, stream-of-consciousness vocal hit for good measure.

I'm honored they accepted it right away and thankful they asked Rob Small @robsmallmasteringltd to get this funk polished enough to appear next to this awesome, wide-ranging release of remixes. 🤜🤛 by @garygritness

Hey y'all what's good ? 👋

On Saturday February 14th I'll be playing the Travelling Cinema Festival @travelling.festival.rennes at the UBU @uburennes , in Rennes, France. 🎦

In the meantime they've asked me to share some City of Angels tunes,
so here's some from the last 50 years. 🎶

1. John Carpenter - Assault On Precinct 13 Theme (1976)

John Carpenter is an indie cinema and synth soundtrack pioneer. I'm a huge fan of this movie that was shot in South Central and I'll be performing an electrofunk remix that I cooked up for the occasion.

2 - Klymaxx - Meeting In The Ladies Room (1984)

This one came out on SOLAR, aka 'the Sound Of Los Angeles Records'. Klymaxx was dreamed up by the badass Bernadette Cooper while she was still in high school in Compton. Also, dig the late great Pop 'N Taco on the video.

3 - LA Dream Team - Rockberry Jam (1986)

Stone cold Los Angeles electro classic.

4 - Kurupt - C-Walk (1995)

It's not my place to say anything about gang culture, but all I know is Daz Dillinger is amazing, and this beat is legendary.

5 - Egyptian Lover - Party (2005)

Can't do this list without Egypt. He's one of the originators of electrofunk, plus he's been in the game for over 40 years. This cut is my personal favorite cause it's just nasty.

6 - Snoop Dogg - Sensual Seduction (2007)

Gotta mention the Long Beach top dog. I love performing this one live, and if you look hard enough you might find a bootleg white label with my remix on it. (shh)

7 - Nipsey Hussle feat. Kendrick Lamar - Dedication (2018)

For me, the electrofunk sound is not just some retro 80s cliché.
It's a soulful and genuine part of hiphop culture that continues to live on, just like Nip's spirit.

8 - Delta Weapon - Night Watch (2024)

Last but not least, here's one from the depths of the LA underground.
Shoutout to @cqqlrecords for puttin' out one of the hardest joints of 2024.

When I say in the opening it's been 'long overdue', I ain't lyin':

We first met at a Dockside Records reunion (shoutout to Al & company) in the early 2K10s, I was goofin' around on bass and he talked about sampling old japanese funk, and that was it. 🤝

I worked with him before on a few things (y'all check out the MMNA tape) but it's the first time we do a tune together -- and I think it's a good 'un.

Initially he wanted me to do some rappin' intro on a cut he was finishing.
I was unsure because I didn't wanna talk some bull, but then it hit me -- 💭

We both come from places that aren't exactly the hippest-looking on a bio:
I grew up super country, and he comes from a pretty rough town.

I thought that was the perfect occasion to speak on it, because for some of us it's easy to wonder what would have been if we where born in a 'cooler' place -- and that's the mental trap.

The way I see it, it's all about puttin' your heart & soul in it and doin' the the damn thang...

As Redman said, "It ain't where you from it's about where you at" ! 📠

As I was puttin' down words the energy got to me and I figured out I might as well go crazy on a solo
and tweak up the bass and arrangement here and there -- but the original melody and groove is all Swoze's. 🎹

Still 'Rollin' Zebras' in '26 🚗

These classic, street-tuned Golf IVs are gettin' rarer, so it's always cool to see a raw one. 👀

As for me, health is still getting tuned - but I might be gettin' a little less rarer this year:

- Got a new joint out my man Swoze @swoze_badbeats87 invited me on for his @formercityrecords EP 💿

- Remix for London's finest @kassiansound on @fauxpoly comin' in hot later this month 🎛️

- Back to bussin some speakers up in the club next month for a special occasion (TBA) 🔊

Plus -- I'm sittin on a dozen unreleased cuts - just needs some polishin' and they'll be spinnin' your way 🧼

Burnin' up in the Meat Rack - by @martinperrystudio

OK. Here's some memory flashes:

- After 15 hours of plane & train cancellations, getting out of a screeching, dusty 4x4 at 1AM on a grass field in front of Downlow, on my Jackie sh, wearing all-white lingerie and black combat boots, walking thru the crowd with my drum machine under my arm, looking at a building on 'fire'.

- Ending up the set on 'French Kiss' while a queen was miming my orgasm on the runway in real-time.

- Feeling freer than I've ever been, dancing for hours every night on that magical runway-shaped stage, exchanging glances, gazes, moves, attitudes, hugs, romance, screams & sweat.

- DJing classic Salsa Dura in a smoked out Maceos in my trusty Leones shirt, dancing & shouting lyrics with 'em - 'Mi Gente' !

- Getting up a few hours later and filling in for someone in that same place, gettin to boogie with a security woman in front of the bar to 'Keep On' before she took her shift.

- Catching the Holy Ghost while 'Calling Out Your Name' was playing - and crying my sh out while praying.

- Getting to meet one of my idols Juan Atkins in person - the only one I shall name drop here - before getting obliterated front row by the best electrofunk live act that will ever exist.

- Slammin' on camping tables, blasting 'Color Me Funky' and hollerin' about P-Funk in the tent area.

- Witnessing someone dressed up as a triangle, pedalling around on a tricycle with a trailer on which was a kid's drumkit - a true Glasto vision.

- Bustin' out my absolute last fuel cells to 'Work It To The Bone' at 6am in the Meat Rack (can't make that one up.)

- This post is too damn long already.

...

- Most importantly, seeing friends & brothers, old & new, and a sentiment of absolute acceptance, friendship and community, which might have come at a moment where I needed it more than I realized.

Well. It's my birthday today. They - mostly - are regular days for me. But this year -- I feel like I just got the best present I could have wished for.

I know it sounds like I'm making this sh about me - which it is absolutely not - guess I had to be a touch emotional in the end.

I been keepin' this 'on the downlow' long enough... 👀

Next week I'll have the absolute privilege of being invited back to @glastofest's @block9official stage @thenycdownlow ,and debut my new House music persona, @jackiegritness 💋

I've been workin' on this for a while and it's so exciting to 'unveil' it in such a mythical place.

I'll never forget the first time I entered that room and the undescribable feeling it gave me. ✨

I was still recovering when @gideon_dj_official hit me up about doin something this year - I just couldn't refuse, and I couldn't dream of a better first gig for this project.🙏

I've been passionate about House for two decades - I always jammed underground classics on the Gary G sets and also performed on many records as Slikk Tim - but deep down I felt like if I was to ever really do House myself, then I needed to build the confidence to truly express the part of myself that deeply resonates with this culture. ♥

This vibe will definitely not be for everyone -- and that's the whole damn point. 💅

There's a few EPs comin' -- and this is the only time I'll be posting about this new persona on this page.
