Comrades!
Still more good news! I am delighted to reveal that yours truly was awarded one of the Lucas Artists Residencies at Montalvo for this next cycle. This current crop of writers, poets, playwrights and screenwriters were each awarded a three-month fellowship in the residency program to be used over the next three years. The group includes individuals working across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, prose, playwriting and screenplays. I see a few friends included here, who I shall congratulate also. Meanwhile, this is the braided travel essay that I'm currently expanding into a memoir, this story, which won an award. Still writing. Still revising. Then maybe someday I can start pitching it. I know that's what I said several months ago, but if you're familiar with how this works, patience is the most important factor. I just have to trust the process, in-between everything else I have to write ... by @garysinghsj

Back again at SALA Fest, the South Asian Literature and Arts fest that happens every year, where I can hang out with Nobel Laureates, Guggenheim Fellows, novelists and other scribes, where the flavors of inspiration, connection and professional advice are the kind I cannot get where I currently live. So many great conversations—the writing life, global conflicts, poetry, climate change, compassion research, Pakistani arts ecosystems, rebellious women CEOs, and so much more. Very peaceful, inclusive vibe that unfolds here. Best quote so far from the novelist Amitava Kumar: “The soft emotion of nostalgia leads to the hard emotion of fundamentalism.” Even better, there's FREE CHAI. taken in Menlo College by @garysinghsj

Photo of the week, right here. Originally from Punjab, Kanwal Rekhi was the first Indian-American founder and CEO to take a venture-backed company public on the NASDAQ stock exchange, way back in the 1980s. And Vinita Gupta was the first Indian-American woman to take a company public in the United States. Each has a relatively new memoir. Both of their journeys are quite amazing. Grateful to be here. Enjoying this one so far, primarily since I live here and remember the 1990s version of Silicon Valley, before Andreessen started using language from Italian fascism to describe his accelerationist bs. The author does a good job at tracing the violent right-wing conspiracies that inspired Peter Thiel, and JD Vance, and all the “Network State” people. Goes good with flowers and espresso. 40 years ago. September of 1986. This dude is causing me a lot of problems today. If you have an angry teenager still trapped inside of you, it helps to keep a picture of the dude, so that when he resurfaces, you can look at the photo and forgive the guy. It helps. Another amazing show opening at the ICA, which has really upped its game over the last few years, thanks in no small part to the Zoë Latzer curatorial machinery. This time it's Greg Ito with new paintings, sculptures and a projection-mapping video installation, all inspired by Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree and Ito's own journey as a father: generational cycles of give and take, stored memories, family sacrifice, internment camps, ancestral wounds, and happy stuff too. Many symbols reappear in different works. So many details I can't go into. These quick images don't do it justice, really. AND -- you can now get an ICA-themed public library card. A fabulous idea.
