It was the best decision to visit The Closed City of Concarneau tonight after a visit to the Museum of Pont-Aven. It’s a magical city!

The poem that I am reading is the French translation of “Leisure”, written by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933).

That show made me happy❤️
Seeing Zahili Gonzalez Zamora (@zahiligz ) in concert the second time this year was a delight!

The universe guided me to see her play for the first time on a late night at Dizzy’s in March and she healed my heart.
I then felt more rooted in my identity (“Soy negra”) and more grateful for my life in New York.

I also found the courage to let go of the wounds of a friendship.

The night I randomly saw that Zahili Gonzalez was in the lineup at Dizzy’s, I was having a solo dinner at Buvette, after leaving Mezzrow, a jazz club in the West Village where a musician added me to a guest list.

Little did I know that attending a second jazz show that night would bring the answers to my existential questions.

I thought it was just a New York thing to find out an Afro Cuban pianist was in concert the same day I spent the whole morning and afternoon reading and researching about the influence and the presence of Afro Cuban spirituality in Wifredo Lam’s art.

It was more than that. It was life showing me that the answers are always around me: in art, literature and music!!!

Lam traveled with André Breton to Haiti for four months between 1945 to 1946 and that trip inspired some of his artworks... taken in Lincoln Center by @gasoleil

An August Sunday in New York: music, literature and art!
After seeing Aaron Diehl play at the Pocket Jazz Club ( @thepocketnyc ), my friend Sam and I walked to Bryant Park.
She was reading an excerpt of a book about James Baldwin for me when we came across a superb portrait of Baldwin made by Beauford Delaney in 1941…
The first time that I saw “Dark Rapture” was in 2019 at the exhibition “God Made My Face: A Collective Portrait of James Baldwin”, curated by Hilton Als at @davidzwirner in NY; then at a museum a few years later.
I am grateful for moments like these!

While reading “Children of the Sea”, the first essay of Edwidge Danticat’s book titled “We’re Alone” earlier this week, I was amazed how the writer brilliantly mentions these facts of Haiti’s history: the 150 million dollars (now close to 30 billion) with interest that Haiti was forced to pay to France as reparations to enslavers from 1825 to 1947, the cholera outbreak that infected UN peacekeepers introduced in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake (page 17 picture); the infamous ship that dumped 4000 tons of toxic incinerated ash from Philadelphia on the beach of a northern town in Haiti, Gonaives, in 1998 (page 18 pic), etc…

The end* of a beautiful concert last night: NYO Jazz conducted by the Grammy-winning trumpeter Kris Johnson (arranger and trumpeter to the Count Basie Orchestra’s album “Basie Swings the Blues”).
These young talented musicians are the future of jazz as Dee Dee Bridgewater said.
A night to remember!
