The Glasshouse of London.

A new short from @nationofartisans

Founded by Phoebe Stubbs in the depths of lockdown, Gather is an ode to "gathering" — a technical glassblowing term for the act of spinning molten glass onto a blowing iron and, of course, the communion of those meeting to enjoy the end product.

Phoebe is building something very special. I urge you all to explore her work and share it with others. taken in London, United Kingdom by @gather.glass

Meet Phoebe Stubbs, owner of Gather Glass. Gather is one of five recipients of the inaugural Paul Smitth’s Foundation’s design grant, ‘British Makers’ celebrating exceptional craft from the British Isles.

Working from their London hotshop, the studio produces handblown glassware, lighting and objects defined by clean forms and considered craftsmanship. Gather brings together traditional techniques and a modern sensibility, with an emphasis on making by hand.

For British Glass, Stubbs reinterprets Paul Smith’s SS26 runway print River Collage, deconstructing its composition to create two contrasting water jugs. Subtle references to the print’s floral origins emerge through layers of coloured glass, carefully injected into the vessels’ primary tones. The resulting works balance clarity and complexity, translating textile pattern into sculptural form.

Hi, I’m Phoebe, the founder of Gather. We’ve got quite a few new followers so I thought I should reintroduce myself and the studio.

We make bold, joyful glassware from my glassblowing studio in South East London. Inspired by the long history of British handmade glass, Gather focuses on age old traditions, updated with contemporary colours, bringing joy to every gathering.

Phoebe has been blowing glass for 18 years and is backed by a great team of talented artisans. We love to share what we do here on instagram, but also with those who visit the studio for glassblowing classes, those who buy our glassware, and who stock it in their beautiful shops.

We are delighted to have new stockists in Louisiana, Toronto, London and Beirut!

🇬🇧 We’ve just launched a Spring/Summer tableware collection in Fortnum and Mason, 1st floor in Piccadilly, London. Dream come true.
🇬🇧 Staple glassware from our Miami collection was part of @8hollandstreet pop-up in @theofficialselfridges A real pinch me moment! Everything they do is wonderful.
🇨🇦 See colourful Miami inspired glassware in @rivercrossingshop in Toronto
🇺🇸 And! In the big apple, Gather is on display in @bergdorfs

The studio are doing a lot of exciting things this year, so I want to let you know our plans and what to look out for in the coming months:

New colours and shapes in our Miami collection -- Champagne, anyone?

Lighting! We’re doing some table lamps this year, in a couple of forms.

And new classes! A longstanding ethos of mine is that cultivating a love of craftsmanship and making in people creates lifelong appreciators of well designed and crafted objects. There’s nothing like attempting a craft skill to gain respect for the work of its makers. To that end, we’re increasing the number and type of classes we offer at the studio!

Why not come and try a make your own drinking glass class? I can guarantee you’ll never have a tastier drink than one from a glass you made yourself!

We hope to see you at the studio soon!

We’re in the FT! @fthtsi autumn design special takes readers inside our Woolwich hotshop, with @alicelascelles at the bench alongside Phoebe and the team.

It was a joy to open the studio up and share the heat and focus of the hotshop with a new audience. Find the feature online now, and on the page in print.

Back in July, while filming The Glasshouse of London, I learned that among glassblowers, one of the most braggadocious flexes is to cook fish with 1,500 °C molten glass.

So we organised a whole supper around this delightfully dangerous ritual.

The tradition of making glass in London is almost entirely dead. Yet, hidden in deepest Woolwich, there is a factory bringing it back.

I spent two days filming Phoebe Stubbs, a master glassblower and founder of @gather.glass, a glasshouse sparking British glass renaissance.

Fusing traditional silhouettes from Dutch still life paintings, gummy-sweet colours, and a furnace named Boudica, Phoebe is a force of nature.
