Currently on view until 9/6/2026 as part of the Mythical Creatures show at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. This exhibition covers an incredible range of contemporary and ancient artwork - I cried many times walking through the rooms. My work comes from an investigation into form as a manifestation of flow that I started in 2023. It features sculptures suspended against black velvet in space, revealed by projection. This technique highlights the idiosyncrasies of human perception: we can’t possibly see the full spectrum of information surrounding us. Instead, we patch together an imperfect picture from slices.

Music - LA trance by Fourtet. This short montage shows some experiments combining dance and projection inside a ring of rain. A projector behind the dancer illuminates the water with animations that respond to their movement. This clip features @ccengelfried and @vaudevillegob, both incredibly smart and talented artists. They were able to transform a fairly limited system into something narrative and compelling. In future experiments it will be nice to explore a greater range of visual responses to different kinds of movement, and to choreograph a piece with two dancers using the water itself as more of a character.

The second video shows some of my process animating and optimizing the spring equations for these little lines in code using processing :) Thanks to @wet.design and Chuck for the lab space+ playground, and @doyleimage for roping in Jessica! Also Thomas Diewald for adapting pixelflow for Processing.

Sound on! (reposting square version). This 1 minute clip highlights my process for developing a visual language and creating content for the evening shows at Jewel in the Changi Airport in Singapore. You can see glimpses of the mockups that took place over the past few years at WET in Los Angeles (where I work). A lot of effort was required to understand the unique and unpredictable ways that water and fog carry projection. For example each water droplet is like a little prism that splits light into a rainbow, so the color changes as you move. The water and fog also visualize the projection beam, creating volumes from 2D images.

Like Hadrian’s Pantheon, which creates a portal for light to enter space in a theatrical way, the shows at Jewel dramatize and respond to the elements. The shows reference structures like Brunelleschi’s Duomo and Trajan’s column, telling a story from all directions at once. They also recall architect Toyo Ito’s project “Tower of Winds,” using projected light to connect an abstract, semiotic understanding of dense urban space with the physical.

Last week! Mythical Creatures at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena closes Sunday September 6th. There’s a closing party Saturday Sept. 5th 7-10 pm. Please join me along with the rest of the incredible community that made this happen!

Outside of that, the museum is open 11-5pm Wednesday through Sunday. Hope to see you soon ❤️

Sound on! 🔊 Music: "Tried" by BADBADNOTGOOD. Here's a montage showing my process for creating content for shows I made at the Jewel feature in Singapore last year. It seems like a distant memory that I was spending 12-18 hours a day working on site for weeks at a time to refine these animations and present to the Changi team with the macguyver-level problem solver and master tech @tech_jose . In preparation for these trips I would spend months working around the clock at WET Design in Los Angeles to test visual concepts, experiment, etc. It was a great experience and also an exhausting one!

I'd like to mention that @doyleimage helped develop and realize this concept and system of projection. Jim's one-of-a-kind mind has dreamed up many fantastic technologies at WET merging light, projection and water. I can't fail to mention lead project designer for Jewel @tim.hunter.54 , WET's design and choreography director @peterkopik , and of course the CEO of WET Mark Fuller. While this clip shows only my animation, there are other talented media artists who worked (and continue to work) on this feature including @blueskygraysun , @ztsprite , @lachlanturczan , @daxia_yyyang , @igernhardt , @natemohler . And of course as I've mentioned before it takes many teams to execute and maintain a feature like this: I'm grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with this unique, driven and extraordinary community. Here's my Dad in the 70s wearing a t-shirt he painted :) At the time he was working as an electrical engineer in Hyderabad. Both my parents moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1980 for grad school at CMU. I think they were inspired the the idea of America as an experiment. I'm happy to reimagine the US again with them for the better. From federal programs to assassinate peaceful leaders like Fred Hampton (COINTEL PRO) to decades of discriminatory loan practices, institutional prejudice against the African American community is not disputable. I'm thankful there's movement towards change and I hope it lasts. #happyfathersday #ftp #timetogrowamustache by @gautam_rangan

In case you're curious what an animator looks like in the wild- here I am in the thick of it with a team of grizzled fountain masters, including @jameswilliamdoyle @nobori72 @peterkopik, Dan Walker, and of course our fearless leader @wetmarkfuller. Joel Bewley (@thepixelpicker ) is not pictured because he somehow took all of these photos while creating amazing content. We were putting together a show at the Bellagio to promote the Game of Thrones premier on HBO. I along with several others worked on the projected content that was mapped to Peter's elegant choreography. Mr Doyle orchestrated the technical aspects of the show, including an actual breath of fire following the projected dragon fire. @hapticvisionalpha and @travis.chao skillfully captured this event - as you can see in the last slide. Overall the show was successful, thanks to the efforts of @alinasayadyan and others it was featured by CNN, the LA times, variety magazine, entertainment weekly, boing boing, and many more. And you could definitely hear drunk people hooting at the end of each show :) Creating this was a unique experience because we could only work in-between regularly programmed shows in 10-12 minute intervals. Think of it like animating while holding your breath and free diving.
