My father, Trey Halberdier, passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by people he loved

It’s hard to put into words what it’s like to lose someone you spent your whole life with, especially when the story is as complicated as mine. My father molded me into the man I am today. Taught me right from wrong, how to fish, how to catch a football, and most importantly, how to be a good man. Trey was the most adventurous man I know, he adored everything from the massive Colorado mountains to the sandy beaches in Mexico. Almost as much as he loved waking me up at 7AM every Sunday to clock into my 3 hour unpaid shift of yard work. Looking back now, I’d give anything to have one more of those Sunday mornings. He also had an incredible sense of humor and could make just about anyone laugh. He had a special way of making even the ordinary moments unforgettable, and I think those are the memories I will treasure the most.

More than anything, my dad loved his family. He loved me, and he loved my sisters to the moon and back. He wasn’t a perfect man, none of us are, but for the majority of my life he was an incredible father and a great man, and that’s the man I will always choose to remember. No matter how complicated the last several years became, nothing will ever be able to take those years away from me.

My father also had a deep love for God and Jesus that never left him. He was a God-fearing man. Throughout every season of his life, his faith remained a part of who he was. I find comfort that there is no more chaos, no more pain, and that he’s finally at peace cradled in the arms of the Savior he loved so dearly, along with my Big Daddy, PawPaw, and his favorite little puppy Stella.

My dad spent his final years battling mental illness, something I kept private because I never wanted it to define him. It changed our family forever and reminded me that mental illness affects everyone it touches. If his story can do one thing, I hope it encourages people that reaching out is one of the bravest things a person can do.

And Dad, if you thought the mountains and waterfalls in Telluride were pretty, I hope you now know there is somewhere a whole lot prettier. by @gavin.halberdier
