💥’OUR MOTHERS GARDENS’ | Introducing the multidisciplinary #artist • Lemogang Matlhong and her work. #Drawing & #Photography | 📸 Join Us.
—
ART & WELLNESS WEEKEND |
INVITATION - Meet the Artist & Discover Her Work
—
• Saturday, 03rd October 2026
• 11h30
• Gaya Habitat for Art & Healing | MCA Art Gallery
• 15 Abbotswold Road, Saxonwold, Johannesburg
__
We’re pleased to introduce the talented Lemogang Matlhong. Come and meet artist and learn about her work and praxis this weekend!
Her exquisitely detailed and beautiful works form part of the group exhibition at GAYA Habitat for Art & Healing.
—
ABOUT THE ARTIST | Matlhong is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between photography, drawing, and movement as embodied exploration.
Her work is rooted in observation, intuition and an ongoing interest in the relationship between the inner and outer worlds | 🌍 @lemogang_matlhong

INTERIOR WORLD-MAKING & CYCLES
In her drawing practice, Matlhong works primarily with fine-liner pens on paper, creating intricate patterns from shapes, forms, textures and movement encountered in everyday life.
She works intuitively, guided by connection and allows each mark to guide the next until patterns unfold into complex organic forms.

DRAWING AS HEALING PRAXIS
—
Repetition is central to her process, becoming a meditative rhythm—almost like a mantra— and the artist seeks out and deploys repetition as a device to create a maze of feeling, cycles of presence, stillness, and inner restoration.
—
CONNECTION, MOVEMENT, HEALING & MEMORY
Across disciplines in her practice Matlhong explores connection - across time, memory, movement and between humanity and nature, through healing, and in the many the ways we experience and make sense of each other, and the world around us. by @gaya_artspace

“With the Earth as mother, from which we are all born, caught in the ceaseless, repetitive cycle of life and death, together with all other organisms on earth, the soil, the air, matter and the ether I am a witness to our immersion in the earth’s resources”.

SAVE THE DATE - ARTIST TALK | EVENT DETAILS

• Date | Saturday 19th September 2026

• Time | 12h30

• Venue | 15 Abbotswold Road, Saxonwold, JHB

| ARTIST STATEMENT | NATURE’S CYCLES
As part of her practice the artist presents a series of poetry that responds to her awareness-raising and experimental photography work.
Reflecting on her practice she says:
🌍
Capturing the abundant fertility in all places, to all forms of life, be the spaces loved and forgotten, abandoned and urban, used and discarded, or ravaged by abuse, the value chain of the earth and the rhythms of natural processes that may go unnoticed, are seen and acknowledged by these images as a testament to the awe and appreciation of the earth as the ultimate maternal source of life.
—
CHARGED SPACES & SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
The growth, degradation and rebirth of places, reflecting the vulnerability, strength and rhythmic motion of the natural world displays a constant symbiosis in all that live together on earth.

DISCARDED TREASURES EXPLORED
What is discarded by some is a treasure to another. These works are a celebration of the traumatic and orgasmic cycle of samsara, the changing roles that we play, in different forms of different lifetimes on a fertile substrate in constant motion.

🔥LADY SKOLLIE, the formidable multi-disciplinary contemporary artist and activist is exhibiting her work in ‘OUR MOTHERS GARDENS’, our current exhibition. #LadySkollie 🥂in person.
—
‘WE ARE THE SEEDS’
The exhibition features the artist’s compelling works - drawings and paintings that boldly confront the euphemisms we use to avoid naming our desires, truth and sexual identity, orientation and organs thereby liberating them from the fear we stand behind!
—
The artist launched her new collection of works at rh FNB Joburg Art Fair this weekend to critical acclaim and embedded themes around the sacred, liberated feminine in our consciousness - standing out in what was a busy and vibrant landscape of artworks.
—
The prolific #artist @ladyskollie is fearless about depicting phalluses for what they are, painting vaginas with a vengeance and just having fun with freeing us from our inhibitions while also confronting critical themes and using experimental practices to layer her work and messaging.
—
Come and enjoy the series by Lady Skollie who is represented by Everard Read art gallery.
We’re pleased to have amongst her more special pieces consigned to us and available for this exciting exhibition exploring feminine power and matrilineal legacies, and ancestry.

The Director’s Perspective | 🎤
‘In documenting my mother, Lauretta Ngcobo, I discovered that our journeys were always intertwined. This film is a daughter’s tribute, a tapestry of memory, archive, and love that traces her path from rural South Africa to the world stage.

It is my way of filling the ‘vacant space’ she spoke of, preserving her voice for future generations and celebrating the power of storytelling as an act of defiance’. – Kethiwe Ngcobo | @andshedidntdie_film
—
‘AND SHE DIDN’T DIE’ - About The Film 🎦
This important documentary provides an account of the extraordinary life of Lauretta Ngcobo-a rural South African storyteller turned revolutionary, political exile, and celebrated feminist writer. Directed by her daughter, Kethiwe Ngcobo, the film blends its rich collection of archive materials with re-enactments, contemporary interviews, and readings from Laurettas books.
She gathers together the various strands of her mother’s life, her own narrative becomes woven into the film, the lives of mother and daughter intertwining in a complex family history.
💥
The film foregrounds women as leaders in the forefront of change, not confined to motherhood. by @gaya_artspace

💥#Artist Talk & Exhibition | Meet RESHMA CHHIBA, contemporary artist, photographer and sculptor presenting her work and contextualising her incredible practice and works in our current exhibition, ‘OUR MOTHERS GARDENS’. Now on.
—
THE GODDESS AS INSPIRATION
Drawing on the great female deities and their symbolism, power and centrality to inform her extraordinary work the artist challenges problematic gender tropes and misrepresentations of female bodies and narratives.
#KALI
—
ABOUT THE ARTIST | Biography |
Reshma Chhiba is a visual artist and dancer based in Johannesburg working at the intersection of contemporary visual art and ‘classical’ Indian dance practices in South Africa, across different mediums with a focus on analogue photography, soft sculpture, non-traditional painting media and performance.

Through feminist strategies her work embodies
defiant womanhood that disrupt patriarchal expectations and logics, while drawing on iconography from Hindu mythology and folk tales.
Central to her practice is an exploration of storytelling through visual, performance and written form.

Her multi-disciplinary approach, merging dance, visual art, and mythological symbolism, creates a distinct narrative that interrogates the intersections of race, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality, particularly within the context of post-apartheid South Africa.🇿🇦 @thetalkingyoni

‘THE TALKING YONI’ - A Body of Work by the Artist |
Inspired by her grandmother, the artist depicts encounters with the goddess Kali – the unbridled, provocative and ferocious goddess of Time.

EMBODIMENT – The Talking Yoni draws on aspects of sexuality and identity as understood through Kali’s embodiment of female defiance and aggression.
Her outstretched blood-stained tongue, her vulva, or yoni, her dark volumes of wild hair and her performative defiance to the camera become the core motifs of The Talking Yoni’s language.
