Update XT 500 - update 6: Electronics is ok niks...

Lately, it has been all about tackling that dreaded 'spaghetti junction' of electrical wiring. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work.. started wkith a ffresh start. We are building a clean, minimalist wiring loom from scratch to keep the frame looking as tidy as possible.

It is tedious work that rewards patience, but seeing the first signs of progress makes it all worth it. Soon, we will be putting the multimeter away.

The journey continues.... This build is truly starting to come alive!

Yamaha XT 500 – Update 5: wiring & help needed
We’ve hit a bit of a crossroads with the XT 500 build, and today we need your help!

First, the reality check: making this bike road-legal means wrestling with the electrical wiring. Let's just say it’s turning out to be more work and a lot more complex than we initially thought. But we're stripping it down and doing it right.
Meanwhile, we’ve reached the point where we need to lock in the silhouette, but we’re completely torn between two different gas tank designs.
Option 1 or Option 2? We can't decide which lines fit the ultimate vision best. But options need work but one more than the other. Drop your favorite in the comments and help us lock in the final look!

Another (unexpected) update! We just got our hands on this absolute beauty: a KTM MX 250 from 1991!

You gotta love these early KTMs. This one definitely needs some love and a proper restoration, but we can't wait to sink our teeth into it.

Yamaha XT 500 – Update 4: Making it road legal!

This time, the focus is all on safety and safety compliance. To get this beast officially ready for the open road, we’ve just mounted the headlight and the horn! Check out the first results.

But we have a challenge ahead of us: all the bodywork will be hand-crafted by us from aluminum!

Not only will this give the XT a unique look we are looking for, but it’s also the perfect project to sharpen our TIG welding skills. Time to grab the torch and practice!

The journey continues. Next up: shaping the aluminum sheet metal.

Even though the Austrian factory team wasn't thrilled about sacrificing their beloved hydraulic system, Smets stuck to his guns. The secret weapon on his bike? Flash back to the Suzuki RM 250 restoration, I couldn't be happier. Massive shoutout to @de.poedercoat.specialist for the insane powder coating work on the frame! Swipe left to check out that flawless finish.

Thanks to their expertise, rebuilding the bike was pure plug-and-play. No clogged threads, no grinding excess coating, and zero sanding down tight fits. Everything fit perfectly on the first try. That’s true craftsmanship!

Just uncovered this absolute gem of an article about the legendary 2001 Triple Header GP at the iconic Eurocircuit in Valkenswaard! This was the very first Grand Prix I ever attended, and man, the nostalgia is hitting hard. I can still vividly hear the absolute scream of the 125cc 2-strokes echoing, that raw sound is forever burned into my memory! But the absolute best part? Watching 2 Dutch heroes storm the podium in front of a roaring home crowd!

Fast forward to this weekend: the MXGP of Arnhem the odds are massive that we will see two (or maybe 3) Dutch flags flying high on the podium again, but this time in the premier MXGP class! What are your predictions for this weekend? Will our Dutch riders dominate the home soil once again? Let me know in the comments!

Sometimes you need to take a step back to move forward. When you are deep into a build, it is easy to get lost in the details. Taking a step back forces you to look at the bike from a distance and ask yourself: Am I still building what I originally envisioned? Does the overall stance and line still look right? Do I need to raise the back, or lower the front?

But this moment is about more than just aesthetics. It is also the ultimate clearance check to see if everything actually fits and nothing rubs. Does the chain clear everything? The verdict? Some areas still need a bit of shaving and fine-tuning to make them absolutely perfect, but we are definitely on the right track! The stance is looking great and the motivation is high.

Yamaha XT 500 - update 3: we got her rolling again. A modern disc brake needs serious wheels, so we went straight to the best: Haan Wheels!

They built a custom masterpiece for this XT. Bulletproof, heavy-duty stainless steel spokes, 18 inch excel rims that line up perfectly with the new brake setup.

The result is insane. It is the perfect mix of that iconic XT look and modern, race-ready quality. The chain line is spot on, and the bike is finally back on its own feet!

Next up: the master cylinder and fine-tuning the brake pedal geometry.

XT 500 Update 2: It’s straight on to the next big challenge. And believe me, this one is just as complex: switching to a rear brake disc! To make the new disc brake rear hub fit, everything is interconnected. Here is what's on the agenda: the swingarm, rear wheel, brake lines, brake pedal. It’s going to be a major puzzle of measuring, welding, and fabrication to get the chain line and brake balance perfect. But the result? A unique restomod that brakes like a modern machine! XT 500 update 1: The first major update for the Yamaha XT 500 is a fact!

I absolutely wanted to mount an upside-down front fork. It wasn’t easy, but after a lot of measuring and trial and error, it’s a perfect fit. Check out the result below!
