A few weeks ago @pvtmule shared a post about whether his younger self was using travel to run from something or toward something. His words have been on my mind since I read them.

My choice to travel full time again was initially to run away. But as my departure date neared, I was actually excited. Not for any grand adventure or bucket list location. Simply for the idea of driving and living in the vehicle that I have poured so much of my self into.

When I am in the Land Cruiser I feel less need to escape. And while I wake most days unsure of how I’ll spend my time, I know that making new memories with Murph and meeting new people and dogs is why we are out here.

There’s never a right time to change your life or pursue your dream. It took me a year of running the same numbers to convince myself to quit my easy, high paying job and leave a nearly perfect house. Within the first week I knew it was the right decision.

So if you are in a similar situation, trust yourself. Not that everything will go to plan, it won’t, but that you have the skill and motivation to make it work. by @gdayjambo

When I adopted Murph, I knew I wanted to invest a significant amount of time into his training so I could responsibly include him in as much of my life as possible. I also knew that his separation anxiety and dog reactivity were going to be big hurdles. Within a week of bringing him home we were in a five-week course teaching him to self regulate when I wasn’t around. It was the most tedious effort with three sessions a day. I’d walk out my front door for a few seconds and come back in for thirty seconds. Ten intervals with tiny increases of time. If he barked, we had to repeat that interval. Over the course of those sessions he learned to hang out alone and not be a ball of anxiety. I could finally leave him at home during work or a quick run to the store. But our walks around the neighborhood could get stressful with all of the barking yard dogs.

Reactivity is something I feel pretty comfortable working on considering everything Roan taught me, but I still wanted to work with a trainer to ensure we built the best foundation possible. Last week was our first session in Bend and the trainer was amazed at what we had already built and how Murph and I work together. And honestly, I was kinda impressed too haha. We spent an hour in the city park slowly decreasing our proximity to other dogs and running Murph through his commands, recall, and introducing him to new regulation methods. By the end of the session, we were able to hang out at the entrance to a dog park with multiple dogs and plenty of people around and Murph just laid in the grass and watched the world go by.

It was one of those moments that you can only understand if you’ve had a reactive dog and felt like their struggles are going to be incredibly limiting to your lifestyle. I remember going through the same thing with Roan and feeling the weight of that anxiety constantly. But I also remember how freeing it felt to learn to understand that crazy red heeler and see him succeed in situations I never thought would be possible.

And now Murph is right at the beginning of that process too :) by @gdayjambo

The start of fall in the high desert. The leaves are changing and the mornings are cold. Somehow the afternoons still hit the mid eighties, but it doesn’t feel real. There is a coolness to the heat. Almost like summer is tired of itself but has to keep showing up. #landcruiser #hj75 #cattledog taken in Bend, Oregon by @gdayjambo
