to party or not to party, to taxi or not to taxi 🙂‍↔️ paura e delirio al fanfulla, e altre storie spaventose, nell’ultima puntata. Fuori ora 🐈‍⬛ by @gdesiena

There’s a box. Black handwriting reads ‘De Stijl / Salita Dei Merli, foto e inviti mostre’. De Stijl was one of the two cultural spaces my parents ran in the 90s; small caves tucked into ground floor spaces. All I remember is a spray painted shutter.

I went through the box only once. I took pictures of what seemed significant: the letterhead on a piece of paper, an invitation to an opening, a photo of a mother (mine) holding a baby (me). Traces, prompts. We can no longer find the box.

“You used to fall asleep in your pram during parties at De Stijl all the time, openings, jazz jams, exhibitions,” she tells me. “The band playing, friends chatting and smoking, people coming in and out; you just sat there, thumb in your mouth, peacefully.” I think this tells me a lot about why I thrive at parties, but I digress.

I know very little about my parents’ lives from those years, both by design, as we hardly spent time together, and by choice, because I resolved for a long time not to dig through the remnants of a life I did get to live, and neither did they.

There’s a door. At the Schifano exhibition moving past screenprints, sketches and diary pages, I felt an odd unease, a pang of nostalgia. I left in some kind of pain, a knot in my throat. That name, those palms, opened a door onto a room I didn’t know existed in my emotional house.

“We exhibited a collection of his palms at De Stijl you know?” of course I didn’t. “We carried the artworks in our Opel from his studio to ours. Papà knew him well.” Of course he did. I’d carried this memory for thirty years. I’d seen those palms before.

I guess a time would have come when I got an itch to know more. What those years left behind, if anything; how they shaped me, if at all. I started asking, uncovering, unrooting.

So here goes de stijl 2.0. A shapeless space. A container of things. It will hold them, carry them, springboard them.

Ivan, you wished for a De Siena studio. You assumed your other daughter and I would be lawyers. This is another kind of studio. Our surname initials, the only thing that made me your daughter, until now.

The door is open. The painting has a title. The box has been found. by @gdesiena

the year is 2015. I’m wearing a battered black bomber jacket that was the uniform for any night out, whether it was at alibi or birthdays or previously visions, or later, upon finding out about SE, bunker or plastic people or caravans or bussey building (rip all of you lil clubs, what a time we had). ofc it’s a total black outfit, with that nike cap with the metallic swoosh - gosh, the chokehold that cap had on anyone from dalston to deptford and beyond for a while.

ofc big headphones (marshalls, which had just replaced a trusted pair of urbanears I carried everywhere between 2011 and 2014- the many colourways, that hipsterdom hopefulness reflected in everything from headphones to a colors show on youtube? odd one to pin as zeitgeist at the time), a gold-plated chain and pink hair, religiously coloured with bleach london home shampoo for £6.99, complete the look. In the background, some storage space from a shoot I must have been on or something.

Listening to: anything by hannah diamond, probably. I used to bump into danny harle at the off-licence all the time that year and thought I was living and breathing at the crossroad of culture. by @gdesiena
