What if the behaviour we see is only part of the story?

At Gabriella’s Double Impact Solutions, we believe that before we can respond differently to a young person’s behaviour, we have to understand the young person experiencing it.

That is the foundation of Beyond the Behavior — our 10-week counselling and mentorship programme for adolescents.

The programme follows five interconnected developmental phases:

SEEN — Recognition
Someone sees me beyond my behaviour.

UNDERSTOOD — Meaning
I understand more about what is happening within me.

ROOTED — Identity
I know who I am and what I stand on.

EQUIPPED — Capacity
I am becoming capable of navigating what life brings.

CONNECTED — Sustainable Support
I know who and what I can turn to, and I can keep moving forward with support.

Together, these phases move a young person from recognition → meaning → identity → capacity → sustainable support.

The goal is not to eliminate struggle or suggest that a young person will never need support again.

The goal is to help them become better prepared to recognize challenges, respond to them, use the capacities they develop, seek appropriate support, and continue growing beyond the programme.

Because the work does not end with the young person.

It extends to the village around them, the relationships, environments and support systems that can help them continue.

Beyond the Behavior
Understanding the signal. Strengthening the young person. Connecting the village.

Do you feel like you are failing as a parent?

Not because you don't love your teen.
Not because you aren't trying.

But because no matter what you do, they seem to be pulling away.

You ask them questions ➡️ they give one-word answers.
You try to help➡️ they shut down.
You try to connect➡️ they lock themselves away in their rooms.

And you start to wonder:

"Maybe I'm getting this parenting thing wrong."
"Maybe I'm failing."

Here’s what many parents don't realize:

The issue is often not that your teen doesn't need you.
It's that they don't yet feel ready to let you in.

Parents may think their teen isn't communicating.
But then, here comes slamming doors , eyes start rolling, hitting you with "I'm good." But your parent instinct (or should I say every fibre in your body) is screaming, "I know something is wrong."

Those moments are the loudest form of communication.

Parents assume the behavior is the problem, yet many times, the behavior is simply pointing us toward the real problem.

The challenge is parents being able to understand the message beneath the behavior.

The question isn't:
How do I get my teen to talk to me?

The better question is: What is my teen experiencing when they talk to me?

Most teen behaviors are not the problem. They are communication.

And until we understand what the behavior is trying to say, we often end up fighting the messenger instead of understanding the message.

Most parents are trying to stop the behavior. Few have been taught how to understand what the behavior is trying to communicate.

And that changes everything!

Parents; if your teen suddenly feels distant, constantly stays in their room, answers back or shuts down emotionally, there may be more underneath the behavior.

The second year. And still, so much to talk about when it comes to marriage.

This year, I had the privilege of returning to facilitate a marriage retreat—an invitation I don’t take lightly.
Our theme was Emotional Intelligence in Marriage and we spent time exploring something that can be easy to overlook:

✅️You can love your spouse deeply and still not see things the same way.
✅️You can hear the same question and arrive at completely different answers.
✅️ You can experience the same situation and walk away with two very different perspectives.
✅️ You can be standing beside the person you married and realize, “We really don’t think alike.”

And our Move Left, Move Right activity made that very real.
What started with movement and laughter quickly became eye-opening as couples saw just how differently they could respond to the same situations.
But the goal was never to prove who was right.

It was to create space to ask:
Can I understand my spouse even when I don't agree with them?

Because emotional intelligence in marriage isn't about thinking alike.
It is about becoming more aware of what is happening within you, becoming curious about what is happening within your spouse, and learning how to communicate in a way that protects the connection between you.

Marriage requires more than love.
It requires awareness.
✅️ It requires communication.
✅️ It requires emotional responsibility.
✅️And sometimes, it requires the willingness to pause and say, “Help me understand.”

I am grateful to have been invited back for a second year to facilitate this conversation, to witness couples engage, laugh, reflect, challenge their perspectives and, most importantly, make space for one another.
Because the goal isn't to become two people who always see eye to eye.

It's to become two people who know how to find their way back to the same team.

Thank you to everyone who made this retreat possible and to the couples who showed up willing to look not only at their marriage, but at themselves within it.

You don't have to fix everything in your home to make it better for your teenager.

You just have to be intentional about something.

One consistent moment in the evening where your teenager knows this time is mine.

Not because the house is perfect.
Not because everything is figured out.

But because you chose them, intentionally in the middle of everything else.

That choice builds something in a teenager that stays with them long after they've left your home.
Start tonight!

8 hours at school and then they came home!

By 7pm the house is running on autopilot.

☑️Dinner
☑️Tomorrow's preparation
☑️Phones
☑️And your teenager in the next room moving through the evening unseen.

Not because you don't love them. Because the day took everything you had.

Here's what I need you to sit with today:

A house that shelters keeps your teenager safe.
A home that supports gives them somewhere to actually land. Those are not the same thing.

And your teenager feels the difference even when they cannot name it.

This week for fifteen minutes. Sit with your teenager tonight with no agenda. Just presence.

That is where it starts. 💙

Save this if it spoke to you.

Share it with a parent who needs to hear it today.

What if the behavior isn't the whole story?

✅️The attitude
✅️The silence
✅️The withdrawal
✅️The anger
✅️The resistance

Before we rush to correct it,
perhaps we need to understand it.

LOOK BEYOND THE BEHAVIOR.
BUILD THE VILLAGE.
HELP THEM RISE.

Because raising emotionally aware, grounded young people was never meant to be a one-person job.

☑️It takes connection
☑️It takes safe spaces
☑️It takes guidance
☑️It takes community
☑️It takes a village willing to see the teen—not just the behavior.

This is Beyond the Behavior.

You can care about how your teenager’s school term is going and still not need a full report every single evening. Both things can be true.

Most Caribbean parents were taught that staying involved means staying informed, every mark, every incident, every friend, accounted for, every day. So picking them up after school becomes a debrief.

Homework time becomes an audit and somewhere in the well-meaning checking, your teenager starts to feel less like a person you are raising and more like a project you are managing.

They stop offering information, not because nothing is happening, but because everything they say gets logged, analyzed, and responded to like evidence.

Here is the distinction I use in my work with Caribbean families. There is a difference between checking on your teenager and checking up on them.

✅️Checking on them says: I am interested in you as a whole person, and school is one part of that.

✅️Checking up on them says: I need to verify that you are performing correctly, and I will ask until I am satisfied. Both come from love.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

A teenager who feels checked up on learns to manage what you see. A teenager who feels checked on learns that you are safe to be honest with — including on the days it is not going well.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵.

Let the details come when they come. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵.

If you are trying to stay close to your teenager this term without turning every evening into an audit, you are doing something important, and it is harder than anyone tells you.

𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗦, 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗢𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗡 𝗔 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗔𝗟.

Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, we are reminded that prevention begins with conversation.

Between 2020 and 2023, 478 people in Trinidad and Tobago lost their lives to suicide, roughly one life every three days.

Behind every number was a person with a story that mattered.

At Gabriella’s Double Impact Solutions, we work with young people who may struggle to express what they are experiencing. The signal may look like anger, silence, withdrawal, fighting, shutting down, or saying, “I don’t care.”

When we focus only on correcting behavior, we may miss the person underneath it.
This is why we say: Beyond the Behavior.

Before labeling a young person as “difficult” or “dramatic,” pause and ask:
“What is this behavior trying to tell me?”
You don’t need perfect words.

Start with:
“How are you really doing?”
Then be prepared to listen.

Prevention begins with connection, being noticed, and knowing someone cares.

Today, we remember those we have lost and stand with those who are struggling.

This one is for the parents wondering why trust with their teenager feels so slow to build. And the teenagers who know exactly why.

“I test you before I trust you with the truth.”

Every small truth is a rehearsal for the big one that hasn’t come yet.

Swipe through → written from the teenager’s side of the small lie you just caught or ever caught

Parents — drop a 1. Teens — drop a 2. You’re not alone either.

Back to school doesn't always mean back to the same place emotionally.

✅️A new classroom.
✅️A new teacher.
✅️New expectations.
✅️New friendships.

And sometimes, a young person is figuring out where they fit into all of it.

So today, don't only ask:
“How was school?”

Make room for:
“How are you feeling about being back?”

No pressure.
No interrogation.
Just an opening for you and your teen.

Because sometimes the most important part of the conversation isn't getting the answer.
It's letting them know they're safe to give one.

You ever sit in a room and watch over a hundred parents and teens lean forward for the same reason, at the same time?

That was Naparima Girls' High School yesterday!

A room full of soon-to-be lower six students, about to step into a whole new chapter for the school term, sitting shoulder to shoulder with the parents who've carried them this far. I had the honor of speaking on Holistic Development, Character and Citizenship as part of " Building Your Best Self-Shaping A Future that Matters."

One thing I wanted them to carry home after this, it's this:
Your best self isn't a destination. It's not a junction you reach and park at. It's a journey...and every journey has an engine running under the hood before it ever moves an inch. That engine is your values. Your non-negotiables. The things about you that don't shift depending on who's in the room or what the environment throws at you. Before we talk physical, mental, emotional, social, & spiritual-before any of that moves, we have to understand what's under the hood.

Here's what I need from every parents reading this to hear too: Holistic Development was never a "teen problem" to fix. It's a whole family posture. The young girls in the room aren't building their best selves in isolation- they're building it with whoever they choose to carry along with them. That's on them to choose wisely. But it's on us, as the village to be worth choosing.

This is exactly the work I do through Beyond the Behavior- going past what a child does, straight to who they are becoming and walking alongside the family the whole way there.

Thank you to the school for trusting me with this platform; and to every parent who showed up yesterday- showing up already told your teen something words don't need to.
