Helping women understand the patterns underneath how they think, feel & relate

A few years ago, life looked very different.

I was married, 12 years into a relationship, running a business we’d built together and believing I knew exactly what my future looked like.

Then everything changed.

But what I didn’t realise at the time was that this ending would become the beginning of discovering who I really was beneath the roles I had spent years playing.

Because I was finally able to see the patterns I had been living from for years.

The need to control everything.
The constant overthinking.
The pressure to hold everything together.
The emotional walls I had built to protect myself.
The ways I had learned to survive long before I even realised I was doing it.

I had spent so much of my life achieving, pushing and being the strong one.
But underneath it all was a woman who had never learned how to feel safe being herself.

Through healing, understanding my childhood wounds and doing the deep work, I began to understand where these patterns came from and who I was beneath them.

Now, I help other women do the same.

The women who can hold everything together in so many areas of life but feel stuck when it comes to relationships, emotions or letting themselves be completely seen.
The women who are tired of carrying everything.
The women who are self-aware but still find themselves repeating the same patterns.
The women who can achieve almost anything but still find themselves struggling with love, vulnerability and emotional safety.

🤍 If you’re ready to understand yourself on a deeper level and start breaking the patterns that have been shaping your relationships and your life, DM me CHANGE and I’ll send you where to begin. by @gee_gniel

On this episode of The Inner Work Diary, we’re talking about what can get in the way of a man fully stepping into his own life and relationships, and what the transition from boyhood to manhood can actually look like.

This is a flow on from last week’s episode, where we explored how childhood experiences can shape the way we show up in adult relationships.

We talk about:
- How your relationship with your parents can shape your adult relationships
- Why psychological separation from your family matters
- How indecision, withdrawal and people-pleasing can show up in relationships
- What it actually means to take responsibility and step into your own life
- How women can unintentionally take over or manage the relationship

It’s been 3 years now since I moved from Adelaide.

Back then I was going through a divorce, had sold everything I owned, packed up my car and had no idea what the road ahead of me looked like.

Since then, I’ve moved states twice, met the love of my life, become a student again, healed in ways I could have never imagined, met depths of myself I didn’t know were possible and learned so much about myself.

I’ve started creating a life that is filled with purpose, service, impact and connection.

Along the way, I’ve started again and made more mistakes than I can count but I’ve had doors open that I couldn’t have planned for and I’ve walked paths I couldn’t have seen from where I was standing three years ago.

And I’ve been reflecting on that a lot lately.

The need for certainty.

The resistance we can feel when the next step isn’t mapped out, when we can’t see the outcome, when the parts of us that have always needed safety, control and certainty are met with the unknown.

For so fkn much of my life, I thought things needed to make sense before I could move.

And ironically, some of the times I’ve felt the most uncertain have also been some of the times I’ve felt the most connected to myself. Funny that…

I think if I’ve learned anything in these three years, it’s that sometimes the structures we’ve built our lives around, the things we’ve been working towards, the identities we’ve built, the things that keep everything neat, packaged and looking a certain way, can actually be the things that suffocate us and disconnect us from who we are at our core.

It’s when we finally take the leap into the unknown, or something catapults us into it, that we can realise just how far we’ve disconnected from ourselves.

I’m not new to beginning again.
I’m not new to finding myself again.
And I’m definitely not new to my ego being obliterated. IYKYK 🙃🫠

But I’m learning that breaking the pattern doesn’t always look like knowing exactly what to do next.

Sometimes it means choosing to move before you know exactly where the path is taking you. by @gee_gniel

If you only change what’s happening on the surface, it’s so easy to fall back into the same patterns.

You can change your schedule, create more space, set the boundary, slow down for a few days on holiday…

But if underneath all of that you still believe you need pressure to perform, you’re still operating from the same place.

Sure, you can change the calendar. But if you don’t change what’s underneath it, the same pattern will find its way back in. by @gee_gniel

A lot of what gets triggered in our relationships can actually have very little to do with what’s happening in the moment.

On this week’s episode we talk about how our childhood can shape our relationships.

We get into:
- Our emotional home and how it’s formed
- Why certain things can feel so triggering
- The different ways we learn to protect ourselves
- How childhood patterns can show up in relationships
- What starts to change when we understand what’s actually underneath the reaction

In this week’s episode we’re opening up a conversation around how the relationship we have with our parents and the things we experience in childhood can shape the way we show up in our intimate relationships as adults.

The patterns we learn early on can become so familiar that we don’t even realise we’re bringing them into our relationships.

We dive into…

- How childhood patterns show up in adult relationships
- Why our partners can trigger much older wounds
- The role of our nervous system in how we respond
- What inner child work actually looks like
- Working through these patterns in real time, within your relationship
& lots more!

Let me know if any of these sound familiar..

1. You do everything yourself.
You’re capable, you know you can handle it. But relying on someone else feels uncomfortable, so you’d rather just do it yourself but then feel like you have to carry everything.

2. Shut down when things feel too much.
You go quiet. Get busy. Distract yourself. Tell yourself you’re fine. You’ve just got really good at pushing your feelings to the side.

3. Struggle to say what you actually need.
You think about it. Maybe you even rehearse the convo a little. Rewrite the text 100 times. Then decide it’s probably not worth bringing up anyway. Until the thing you “didn’t care about” becomes resentment and a need that feels unmet 3 weeks later.

4. Keep yourself busy.
Work. Plans. Cleaning. Training. Organising. ALL the things, there’s rarely any space until you’re completely exhausted. Because being busy can feel easier than slowing down enough to notice what’s going on inside you.

5. Want deeper connection but still keep part of yourself guarded.
You want to feel loved. You want intimacy. You want someone to really know you & see you. But when it starts getting too close & vulnerable, part of you wants to pull back, take control or convince yourself of some other story.

6. You overthink things a lot.
The conversation. Their tone. That one thing they said 3 days ago. You replay it, analyse it and try to work out if it meant something else.

You can really start thinking these things are just who you are. I see it in many women who come into my world & I did this for YEARS.

“I’m independent.”
“I’m not very emotional.”
“I just like being busy.”
“I work better under pressure”.
“I’m just an anxious person/an overthinker etc.”

Sometimes what looks like personality is actually something you learnt.

And if it once helped you feel safe, loved, in control or protected, of course it became a way of being.

I’ve created a free guide to help you understand why these patterns show up, build more emotional safety within yourself & create deeper connection without continuing to push love away.

I’ve genuinely lost count on the amount of times I’ve cried to Pete about how healing this relationship has been. 🥲🥲

The timeeeee I spent thinking I was stuck, stuck in what I felt, how I functioned, how I thought…

That version of me didn’t know how much of that she could change. In how much WASN’T who she was, just what she learnt.

This relationship has taught me so much about myself, about loving a man, healed me and changed me in so many ways, all while helping me love myself more along the way too. ❤️‍🩹

Every woman deserves to know this is possible. by @gee_gniel
