My first session as Artist in Residence @bullseyeglass has come to a close.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to spend time inside their facility, working alongside their incredible team and learning how to translate my drawing practice through glass powder materials on fused glass.

It was definitely a major learning curve, but I’m extremely happy with the progress so far and excited to return for the second half of the residency.

Special thanks to Ted, Skyler, Kim, Hannah, Hanmi, Mary Kay, Alex, Jamie, Jim, and everyone else at Bullseye for the generosity, guidance, and support. S/O to @suzanne_head for the virtual lessons and amazing tools!

I love Portland. Until next time! ✌️ taken in Portland, Oregon by @gee_horton

“And the bed grew”, currently on view at @cincycac through August 30. 💫

Exhibition Statement: Gee Horton’s Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime unfolds across two galleries of the CAC, continuing a new chapter of an ever-evolving body of work.

If the previous chapters examined the call to return home again, Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime descends into what we inherit once we arrive. This narrative-driven exhibition features Horton’s loosely autobiographical account of the struggles of Freeman Little, a 37-year-old Black man living with Guent Bu Wa, a rare hereditary sleep disorder that causes vivid, prophetic dreams.

Horton’s new Chapter 4 introduces shifts in the scale and viewpoint of his artistic practice. Through immersive sculptural assemblages, symbolic iconography, and his beloved photorealistic figures, Horton weaves a dreamlike account of the consequences of intergenerational trauma, cultural legacy, and the rupture of colonial inheritance. The narrative unfolds within a cosmology where memory refuses erasure and the past presses insistently into the present.

Here Horton employs photography and cyanotype (a blue-toned photographic printing process) to build upon his meticulously drawn portraits and imagine absorbing visual imagery shaped by dream logic. In these new works ruptured histories resurface and inheritance demands witness. Horton invites presence instead of closure, knowing some feelings are too big to explain away or resolve. They simply need holding.

“The Western World,” she said, “has a history of labeling what it can’t understand.” - Page 17, The Healer

Yoooooo, I’m so excited to share this new body of work and the evolution of my practice THIS FRIDAY (4/24) @cincycac

Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime…
the exhibition + the companion book is happening… (join the collections list for early access to the book.)

Exhibition Statement:
Gee Horton’s Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime unfolds across two galleries of the CAC, continuing a new chapter of an ever-evolving body of work.

Through large-scale photorealist drawings, photography, collage, video, and installation, Horton reflects on Black masculinity, generational memory, and childhood - exploring themes of safety, vulnerability, and the fragile boundary between freedom and protection.

In his preceding work, Chapter 3: Be Home Before the Streetlights…, Horton examined the call to return home.
Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime descends into what we inherit once we arrive.

This narrative-driven exhibition follows Freeman Little, a 37-year-old Black man living with Guent Bu Wa, a rare hereditary sleep disorder that causes vivid prophetic dreams.

In this premiere of Chapter 4, shifts in scale and viewpoint emerge across Horton’s practice. Through immersive sculptural assemblages, symbolic iconography, and meticulously drawn figures, he weaves a dreamlike account of intergenerational trauma, cultural legacy, and the rupture of colonial inheritance.

The narrative unfolds within a cosmology where memory refuses erasure and the past presses insistently into the present.

These large-scale graphite drawings combined with cyanotype imagine imagery shaped by dream logic. Ruptured histories resurface. Inheritance demands witness.

Horton invites presence instead of closure - knowing some feelings are too big to resolve. They simply need holding.

Lastly, this exhibition is dedicated to my late father, whose influence shaped not only this work but also my personal healing journey and the man I’ve grown to become. We love you, Pop! New Acquisition 🌻

We are pleased to announce the recent acquisition of two works by Cincinnati artist Gee Horton. @gee_horton recently debuted his first solo exhibition, "Coming of Age,” at the Alice F. & Harris K. Weston Art Gallery in Cincinnati in November of 2021. In 2020, Horton displayed a piece at CAM as part of @paloozanoire’s exhibition Black & Brown Faces.

Horton’s work navigates and investigates his growth as a Black man in American culture. His hyper-realistic charcoal and graphite drawings contrast the human form with cultural symbols, exploring personal and cultural histories and experiences through unique and arresting portraiture.

“The Sweetest Thing” (images 1 and 2), writes Horton, “renders childhood innocence for a little girl who is simply drawn to beauty. The beauty of sunflowers. The way they open to the sun. The way they follow the sun. And, the beauty of her hair. Her hair is an extension of her entire being. It is beautiful. Her beauty touches everything, but she’s unaware of it because of her innocence. Her hair and sunflower feel like magic. They make her feel a sense of wonder, delight, and happiness. This piece is conceptualized to celebrate and affirm the innate innocence and vulnerability of black girls. This drawing consists of 200 ft of box braided hair that is attached (interior and exterior) on the customized framed shadow box. The sunflower is three-dimensional, made of archival floral paper which was hand-crafted by Toronto-based Floral Artist, Jessie Chui”

“Black on Both Sides” (images 3, left side image 4) is a meditation on the complexities of male adolescence, preservation of innocence, objectification of the Black body and the constant struggle to be seen, heard, respected, and loved. The "Coming of Age" series is conceptualized to explore, celebrate, and affirm the innate innocence and vulnerability of black youthfulness. This portrait is of his own 14-year-old nephew and serves as Horton's style of next-generation narration, which is becoming a channel for Horton to study his own adolescence.”

Stay tuned for information on when these new acquisitions will come on view.

Cincinnati, from the bottom of my heart—I love you!

The “Coming of Age” mural series for @blinkcincinnati Blink 2024 is officially complete, featuring 3 permanet murals stretching south along Vine Street, starting at 1714 Vine and continuing three blocks through Over-the-Rhine, existing as an open-air gallery that invites reflection and meaningful conversation.

Thank you to everyone who carved out time to visit, experience the work, and witness the light-based projections. Everything we created and built was done with love and intention. We’re so grateful for your love, support, and time!

To everyone who contributed to this project—especially @amberdawn_1 —it wouldn’t have been possible without you! Big shoutout to @gmdamico for creating the light-based projection and Matthew Dayler of @chromaprojects for executing all three murals. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the beautiful people of Cincinnati for believing in this vision, standing alongside me on this journey, and reminding me that this work is about something greater than myself. @blinkcincinnati mural #2 is complete—one more to go!
📍1600 Vine Street, Cincinnati, Ohio

Full Circle Moment: Back in 2019 at the Blink Festival, I was live drawing inside a 6ft box for one of @cincynice Social House installations. Fast forward to just days before @blinkcincinnati 2024, and that same drawing has now evolved into a large-scale mural in the heart of the city, as part of one of Blink’s permanent mural installations. None of this would’ve been possible without the love and energy of Cincinnati and the people who continue to inspire and uplift this work. This is for all of us. With love, - @gee_horton 🫶

S/O to my guy Matthew Dayler of @chromaprojects for his amazing execution on all three murals.
Additional S/O @blinkcincinnati , @the_agar_co , @cincynice , @artswave teams for believing in the vision. You all are about to witness something special during @blinkcincinnati during the weekend of Oct. 17-20th
