Home lab, not a toy. Same stack I design for industry, running at home.

📷 Photo 1 — Proxmox VE node 1: Xeon E5-2680 v4, 128 GB, ZFS raidz1 on 4 NVMe, in an Antec case behind a CyberPower 1500AVR. UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber on top.

📷 Photo 2 — The K3s rack: 6 × HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini on bare metal. 3 control-plane nodes (embedded etcd, HA) + 3 workers, 36 vCPU / 128 GB, on their own VLAN. Next to the rack, the Dell OptiPlex 5050 SFF is Proxmox node 2: idle by design, receiving ZFS replication over a direct 25G link, ready to take over if node 1 goes down. A Raspberry Pi 4 is the QDevice — the third vote that keeps quorum honest. HA with softdog fencing, no shared storage, no Ceph.

On top of it: Longhorn, Traefik, CloudNativePG, kube-prometheus-stack, HiveMQ, InfluxDB 3, Grafana — and zero inbound ports thanks to Cloudflare Tunnel. Everything is code in my geeklab-infra repo; the hardware could burn tomorrow and I'd rebuild it from git.

Why? Because when I put a vibration monitoring pipeline or an MQTT edge architecture in front of a client, I've already broken it and fixed it at 2 AM here first.
I build the solution for my clients even if it doesn't exist.

"Who needs $1,000 for a killer PC?"

Not me! 😜 Built this beast on a budget to prove a point: you DON'T need to break the bank for awesome gaming, CAD work, or even machine learning.

Specs that SHINE:
* CPU: Intel Xeon (12 cores, 24 threads) - pure multitasking POWER
* RAM: 64GB - because why not?
* GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Armor OC (11GB) - eye candy AND performance

This baby handles it ALL. Smooth gameplay? Check. Complex 3D models? Easy. Even dipping my toes into AI stuff, and it's not breaking a sweat.

The takeaway: Smart choices, not just money, make a great PC. Need advice on your build? Hit me up!

Ditched the cloud for my own pocket-sized data cloud! Introducing my portable NAS server, built with a Raspberry Pi and powered by OpenMediaVault. Now I can bring my own secure storage, media streaming, router, VPN, WiFi and more wherever I go.

Features:

Safe and sound: No more relying on third-party servers. My data is always encrypted and under my control.

Storage on the go: Access all my files from any device, anywhere. Movies, music, documents - it's all just a tap away.

️ Built-in firewall and VPN: Stay safe and secure on any network.

One-stop media shop: Stream movies, music, and TV shows directly to my devices.

Docker ready: Run all my favorite apps and services with ease. App and Web development environments.

OpenMediaVault: OpenMediaVault is a free and open-source NAS software that makes it easy to turn your Raspberry Pi into a powerful data center. It's lightweight, flexible, and packed with features.

Boundaries of a portable NAS server:

Storage: The amount of storage you can bring with you will depend on the size of the USB drive or SSD you use.

Power: You'll need a portable power bank to keep your NAS server running if you don't have access to an outlet.

Performance: A Raspberry Pi is a great little computer, but it's not a powerhouse. Don't expect to run super-demanding applications on your NAS server.

Overall, a portable NAS server is a great way to take control of your data and media. It's affordable, easy to set up, and incredibly versatile. If you're looking for a way to ditch the cloud and keep your data close, I highly recommend giving it a try! #openmediavault #portablenas #cloudstorage #datasecurity #mediastreaming #docker #diy #tech taken in Katy, Texas by @geekendzone

My son's PC got a major upgrade!

This gaming rig was starting to run a little slow, so I decided to give it some love. I cleaned out the dust, reapplied thermal paste to the CPU and GPU, and installed a fresh copy of Windows. The difference is incredible! The PC is now running much faster and cooler.

Here's what I did:

Deep clean: I used compressed air(air can)to blow out all the dust bunnies from the inside of the case. Every nook and cranny got the treatment!

Fresh thermal paste: The old paste was probably dry and cracked, so I swapped it out for a nice, even layer of fresh stuff. This helps transfer heat from the CPU and GPU to the heatsink, keeping things nice and cool. ❄️

Clean install: A clean install of Windows wipes away all the bloatware and junk files that can slow down your PC. It's like starting with a blank slate! ✨

The results? My son is stoked about how well his PC is running now. He can game without any lag or stuttering, and it's even quieter than before. Plus, I know the inside of his PC is nice and clean, which gives me peace of mind.

If your PC is starting to feel sluggish, giving it a TLC session like this can make a world of difference. It's not too difficult to do yourself, and you can find plenty of tutorials online if you need some guidance(or DM me) 🙂

What do you think? Have you ever given your PC a makeover?

Every day, I get questions from content creators, coworkers, family, and friends about the best setup for them. But I always notice the same thing: they don't invest in technology that will make their work easier and save them time, because they think that equipment, devices, or PCs are expensive. That's why I've become an expert in affordable technology, the search for the best tool that fits your budget.

Here's an example, an Intel Xeon (E5-2695v2) with 12 cores and 24 threads, which can be found on eBay for around $16.
Now, people always ask me, "What's the best?" But first, we need to understand what you need, and I can help you with that too. taken in Cibolo, Texas by @geekendzone
