4Columns is over. I wrote around 70 long essays on experimental music, art and cinema for this wonderful publication over the years, and I’m so sorry that I can’t write more, as the publication has closed down. My final piece, on Boards of Canada, was recently published, and I encourage you all to read it. Also upcoming: I have an essay on music that will be in a new book to be published by Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin - more on that later. I’ve written over a thousand pieces on the arts over the past 25 years, but I don’t know how much longer I can continue as a critic in these trying times. I will be moving all my work to Patreon - please follow me there if you are able. by @geetadayal

Here are some essays about music I wrote in 2025 for 4Columns (link in bio to read.) I’ve written around 70 long essays on experimental music, film and art for 4Columns over the years and I’m sad to say that the publication is closing down in June. I’ll have three more pieces published there in the coming months before the publication ends forever. In June, I’ll be moving all of my writing to my Patreon. by @geetadayal

I first met Keith around 25 years ago. He quickly became a good friend, and a mentor in all things music. In 2005 I visited Glasgow and stayed at his place, which was crammed full of records. Thousands upon thousands of records, but “I still don’t have as many as Andy Weatherall,” he’d joke — he still had to buy more. Saw Optimo at the Sub Club which was an amazing, almost spiritual experience. Throughout the years I got to hang out with him and Jonnie in cities around the world, and saw Optimo more times than I can count. Keith was one of the most generous and kindhearted people I’ve ever met. He was a DJ’s DJ, who was in it for all the right reasons. He fully believed in the power of music to build community. Optimo was community. 2025 has been a brutal year with so many losses to cancer, including brilliant friends and colleagues Jonathan Sterne, Peter Shapiro and now the pain of losing Keith McIvor. Goodbye Keith. I’ll never forget you. by @geetadayal

I spent much of the summer writing about the great Wadada Leo Smith for the American Academy of Arts and Letters. It’s a beautiful 15-page publication. Text written by me with full color artwork by Wadada on the occasion of his upcoming exhibition in New York. Also check out recent pieces by me in 4Columns on Chuck Johnson and Arooj Aftab! Big thanks to my Patreon supporters who encourage me to keep writing on experimental music. by @geetadayal

Music journalism has passed away. Now, our streaming overlords give us stuff like this. “A noisy, confrontational frankness that still sounds revolutionary.” Good grief. by @geetadayal
