Bend thy knee

36x45in
Acrylic and Charcoal on kraft paper
March 2025

I have been working on this since last year as it was a part of my journey in getting back to my true self. A lot of my art is heavily influenced by music and spiritual experiences. I refer to the projection of my pieces as visions. when I had the vision for this piece, I was on a train back home, listening to “Sound and Vision” by David Bowie. he’s a creative I hold close to my heart, and for some reason the song made me cry in the moment, although I had listened to it many times before. “Waiting for the gift of sound and vision.” My art is personal and during this time in my life I was in deep reflection and every time I was given a vision by the source, I felt immense gratitude. So much so it overwhelmed me. This artists music reminds me to be rebellious and authentically myself. Being comfortable with the unusual. For some reason, I feel gravitated towards jesters and magicians. So I had envisioned this character bowing down, not putting on the performance, but wielding something that represents power. these characters who are put in a position normally to entertain strike fear in someone with just simply a gaze or position. Not a lot of my pieces are of what ifs scenarios. But I believe it reins true to myself as I am ruled by communication. My goal is to reach other people in sharing ideas whether they are unusual or controversial. by @gem.maya
