It’s been about 2 years since we became a 1-dog house again, and lately the time has felt right to try to find a new brother for Biggie.

Meet Debo! About 10 days ago, this lump of goodness joined our family, and it’s been an amazing reminder of just how fast a new element can enter your life and feel right at home. Even more than that (especially in light of how the world at large has felt of late), it was nice to be reminded that even when you think you’ve found your limit, there is always room for your heart to get a little bit bigger. Maybe we should all try taking a beat and considering whether what we’re doing is making our hearts bigger or smaller. Or maybe we should all just go to the animal resource center and get big goofy pitbulls! There’s soooo many more where he came from. ❤️

TLDR:
I have a new dog and now my life is even better. Dogs make life better. Adopt dogs and dropout of society. Debo rules. by @gemcitynate

RIP Gaius The Invincible

When I brought Gaius home, I was a 21 year old kid going to art school during the day and working at a call center at night. That was 15 years (and one day) ago, and in that time many things have changed, but for whatever it was worth, he and I were constants in each other’s lives.

It wasn’t always easy, and I’m quite certain we were both sons of bitches to one another on many occasions, but he taught me a lot and I loved him.

We’ve shared at least 10 different homes and nearly as many roommates over the years. From the school days to the party days, the suburbs to the city, single bois living alone in a high rise apartment to “growing up” and building a family – wherever I went, he went with me. Now, I go on without him, as his ‘shitty little legs’ can carry him no more. I hope you had an okay time being my sidekick, bud. You had a hell of a run, and you did it your way, for better or worse. Goodbye buddy, I’ll never forget you. If there’s a God of doggie heaven, he’d better hide his chicken someplace high, because you’re his problem now. 😉

Been a minute since I’ve indulged in any long form social posting, bear with me.

Last night, after nearly 13 years of training, I was awarded my black belt in jiu jitsu by my professors, Jon Stutzman and Sean Gray, as well as my dear friend Daniel Lopez. It’s a moment every serious martial artist allows themselves to envision at times. I’ve thought about how it would feel, what I would say, what it would mean.

Most of what I’m feeling is gratitude. Grateful for all the training partners and mat mentors that have molded me through the years. Grateful to my family and my loved ones to understood when I carved out space in my life for this commitment and worked around it with me. Grateful to the staff at S&G for creating an environment where individuals feel free to learn and grow and express in their own respective ways – for the investments they have made in me, and for the responsibility they have entrusted in me. I will not let you down. I’m grateful to jiu jitsu itself for all the wonderful gifts it’s given me: community, persistence, dedication, grit, technical understanding, and most precious of all – something to strive for and aspire to. Anyone who has ever really trained will tell you it’s addictive, and I’m here to tell you that it’s the growth that creates the hunger, and that hunger creates the addict. In a span of 13 years we all encounter our share of trauma and dark days, and they can break you if you don’t have something to wake up for, to aspire to. Jiu jitsu gave me that when I needed it.

As far as what it “means” to be a black belt? I think it just means I’m on the right track. Like every other belt I’ve received along the way, now that I have it, it’s time to earn it. I don’t know if I have a lot left to prove to anyone, but I have a lot left to give, and that’s what I plan on doing.

I also have a lot left to say and a lot more people to thank, but I’m guessing most of you have already scrolled away by now soooo…I guess that’s how the next chapter starts. See you on the mat.
