Hi, I’m Gemma and this is Beyond the Line, a series from my YouTube channel Beyond the Pace.

I created this space to tell stories that don’t usually get highlighted.
Not just elite athletes, but people who train, race, work, study, and still find the time to build something meaningful around sport — communities, connections, ways of showing up for others.

--> swipe to the next one -->

In a world where endurance sports often revolve around numbers, PBs and constant optimisation, I felt the need to look somewhere else.

This project comes from a personal shift.
After years focused almost entirely on productivity and building the “perfect career”, I realised I wanted to ask a different question.

Not how to perform better but how to be happier.

And what role does sport play in that.

If this resonates, you’re in the right place.

Hi, I’m Gemma.
Since there are quite a few new people here, I thought I’d reintroduce myself. Especially because this profile probably looks like two different versions of me.

I’ve been on Instagram for a long time (I think my first post was around 2014), and up until 2023 I mostly used it to document travels, my interest in art, and eventually my work as a curator, journalist and researcher.

Then, between 2023 and 2024, I burned out.
I stopped posting, lost motivation, and started questioning everything since I had built my identity almost entirely around my work.
So at some point the question became: what am I, if not that?

Around the same time, I got into running, and then triathlon. Alongside therapy, that slowly shifted my mindset.

Endurance sports gave me structure, but also something else. It has been a way to confront my perfectionism and how self-critical I can be.

That’s when I started documenting the journey.

Not always consistently (impostor syndrome is real, and I don’t naturally love putting myself out there), but I’m realising I actually enjoy it.
It gives me space to experiment, be creative, and connect different parts of my background, from video games and interactive systems to the sport tech world.

And most importantly, it has introduced me to people with incredible stories.

So I’m still figuring things out. Like what it means to reframe yourself, to change direction, to build something that isn’t linear or planned.

And how something unexpected like sport can teach you a lot about who you are.

If you’re going through something similar, or just curious to follow along, you’re very welcome here.

✨

I've always been into sports, especially swimming, but I've never been interested in races and competitions.

This changed in 2023 when I started this incredible journey in running and then triathlon. Alongside the fun and the super duper moments there were a lot of downside ones but it's all part of the process of self growth, know yourself better and open up to new challenges.

Curious to see what 2026 will unfold!

If you'd like, follow my journey and share your pivotal moments in your own sports journey.⭐

It's almost been two whole weeks since the @ironmanitaly 70.3 Emilia-Romagna, and I'm still totally buzzing from the race! ✨🚴‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Man, I had so many hiccups! 🤦‍♀️ Like, I went the wrong way during the swim, then my bike had some mechanical issues so I had to get help, and to top it off, I had stomach problems on the run. 😫 But honestly, every single race is like a big step forward and a chance to get better at this sport.

(Like definitely reviewing my nutrition strategy next time 🫪🫪)

Along the way, I got to meet so many awesome people who were just enjoying the whole ride, the adventure, and the amazing support from family, friends, and even strangers cheering us on! It was pure magic! ✨🤩

I was super happy and proud to wear my @humango_ai trisuit 🔥. This journey with Hugo really pushed me and made me appreciate the whole experience even more. Seriously grateful!

Big thanks also to @rudyproject because you guys totally saved my butt! I actually left my bike helmet at home (which was probably a sign of how wild my race was going to be, looking back! 😅🤷‍♀️). But I got the chance to snag the coolest bike helmet out there and it matched my kit perfectly! You guys rock! 🤘

A massive shout-out to my mom 💖 because she's always, always supporting me in my sports adventures. She's seriously the MVP of my support team!🫂👑

And hey, thanks to all the friends and people who supported and cheered me on every step of the way from day one, on race day, after the race, and always pumping me up! You're the best!

So ready to jump into some new adventures now! 🤩

I've never taped my bike before, but this time I really needed to replace the old tape on my aerobars.

Got the @prologo.official Plaintouch in orange to match the details on my bike and I'm pretty happy with the result! I might have added a bit too much electrical tape at the end to secure it but for it being the first time, I really can't complain!

The next level will be replacing the one on the handlebars since it's a bit scratched 🤓

Almost less than one week to @ironmanitaly Emilia-Romagna and we are super excited! Bit also a bit nervous, but mostly happy to come back and have a great time!

Thanks to @humango_ai for, first of all, the super duper trisuit and for making me look like a professional, at least I look the part..I hope 🤣🤣 These months training with Hugo have been quite a journey and I continue to learn how to get better and build confidence in myself day by day.

I also want to thank my friend @inspire.2.tri because she gave me extremely important tips for navigating both T1 and T2 more efficiently. Aside from the funny video here, I realized how my strategy for the transitions was all over the place last year and having an experience triathlete, as well as a very encouraging person, guiding you to perform a better race both strategically and mentally, it's priceless. 🙂‍↕️

Well, just one week and then we roll!!🤙🤙

I've been doing more open water swimming lately for Ironman 70.3 Cervia but also a lot of snorkeling and yeah, I just enjoy swimming so much. I'm always happy when Hugo gives me swimming sessions @humango_ai , especially the long ones, because when I can I'll just run to the beach and I'm happy like a baby. Or even the pool (when it's not crowded), even though I'm more comfortable in salty waters!

And honestly, since I'm planning to do a full Ironman next year, I really can't wait to start training for it so I can swim for longer🤙🤙

I just like being in the water 🩵

Last year at my first IM 70.3 I brought 2 bottles in my frame, 750 ml each, and honestly it wasn't enough. The half distance in Cervia started at 12pm so you end up on the bike in the hottest hours of the day. Plus, I sweat a lot and I drink a lot on the bike, so this year I wanted to be better prepared.

Here's my plan:

➡️ 2 500ml bottles on the rear cage with carbs
➡️ 1 750ml bottle in the frame with electrolytes
➡️ 1 750ml bottle in the front with carbs (probably electrolytes too, I've tested both options)

The @profile_design front hydration system is the latest thing that I've added and it fits perfectly with my clip on aerobars. I also added the mouth valve for better access to water.

This is what is currently working really well for me and it leaves me with an empty bottle cage in the frame so I can get water from aid stations to cool off or drink if I need more liquids.

Less than 3 weeks to @ironmanitaly

I'm making a few upgrades for my upcoming @ironmanitaly 70.3 Emilia-Romagna and one of these is changing my @lookcycle cleats for new ones!

So, this is my first time changing these myself. I know it's super easy, but the other times I've done it, I just took my shoes and bike to the shop when I had maintenance to do. But hey, I want to start doing more stuff on my own, so why not this too?

The best advice I got was to trace around the old cleats on the shoes with a pen or marker. That way, you know exactly where the new ones should go, and you don't have to guess. Once you do that, the whole thing is pretty easy. I just tried it a couple of times to make sure the shoes clipped in and out without any problems, and that was it.

Now that this is done, I'm gonna share how I updated the hydration situation + fuel storage, and then I'm gonna take the bike to the shop for the last check before the race.

3 weeks and 4 days to go!!
