I’m very happy to share a new chapter in my work: I am now represented in Milano by @lepleiadiartgallery

What began as a conversation is growing into a long-term collaboration, and I’m incredibly excited about what is ahead.

Two works from my series Delicate Like You and Me are now available through the gallery on Artsy, with a group exhibition coming up in Milano — followed by a solo exhibition later this year.

For me, this collaboration feels particularly meaningful. Milano has such a rich and distinctive relationship with contemporary art, and I’m looking forward to bringing my work into this new context and meeting the people who will encounter it there.

A new city, new conversations, and new possibilities.

🖼️ Gemma Pepper: The Quiet Locus

What happens when photographs are removed from their original contexts?

The Quiet Locus explores displacement through vernacular photographs removed from their original contexts and placed into unstable environments — submerged in water, partially buried beneath stones, overtaken by organic matter, or interrupted by insects.

Through these encounters, images become permeable and contingent. Faces blur, surfaces dissolve, and details are obscured or revealed through shifting material conditions.

Rather than illustrating displacement, the work enacts it, allowing time, environment and chance to act as collaborators.

The work explores how photographs migrate across contexts, accumulate and lose meaning, and resist stable interpretation.

Mae The Quiet Locus yn archwilio dadleoliad drwy ffotograffau poblogaidd a dynnwyd o’u cyd-destunau gwreiddiol a’u gosod mewn amgylcheddau ansefydlog — wedi’u boddi mewn dŵr, eu claddu’n rhannol o dan gerrig, eu gorchuddio gan ddeunydd organig, neu eu torri ar draws gan bryfed.

For World Photography Day, I keep thinking about the photographs we inherit — the ones that outlive the people in them, carrying fragments of lives we may never know.

Who were they?
What were they thinking when the shutter clicked?
What happened after the photograph was taken?

I collect these forgotten images and rework them, not to give them an answer, but to let them remain open to new stories.

In Silent Witness, photographs become more than records of the past. They become places where memory, absence and imagination meet.

Perhaps that is the strange magic of photography:

we take a picture to remember something — and years later, the picture begins remembering for us.
