We are thrilled to announce that our Shanghai Chapter has officially launched with its first event! Members took a guided tour of Kaleidos: Color, Culture, and Craftsmanship with Gislain Aucremanne @curated_by_gislain, Heritage Curator Director at BVLGARI @bvlgari. Featuring a combined 300 pieces of jewelry and works of contemporary Chinese artists, the exhibition covered three chapters; The Science of Colors, Color Symbolism and The Power of Light. Encompassing high jewelry masterpieces as well as pieces from BVLGARI's antique and private collections, the vast presentation spanned from the brand's founding to the present day, offering a fresh perspective on Eastern and Western color concepts. The integration of the works of artists Liang Manqi and Zhang Ding added a unique perspective of Chinese culture, philosophy and artistic traditions - the perfect underscore to this unique residency. “Hands up if you’ve travelled across the globe to see an inanimate object?” It was a sentiment that made everyone laugh but also a sentiment everyone could relate to, as Gem X London gathered to hear the extraordinary globe-trotting story of Serena Kutchinsky @serenakutchinsky and her hunt for her family’s namesake ornamental egg. A fascinating and witty tale of passion, obsession and graft, the Kutchinsky Egg was a two-foot solid gold ornamental egg, encrusted with rare pink diamonds and priced at £7 million in 1990 - the masterpiece of the namesake jewelling house and its head - Serena’s father - Paul Kutchinsky @house_of_kutchinsky. But upon failing to sell it, the house collapsed, the strain fractured Paul’s marriage and the egg vanished, seized by creditors. Serena’s story is the subject of her debut novel, released in March this year; her journey to track down this extraordinary object and find out about the truth behind it. In reading an excerpt and discussing her journey in conversation with Sarah Duncan @sarah_j_duncan, Head of Jewellery at Lyon & Turnbull @lyonandturnbulljewels , Serena shared a personal evening reception with members, offering a rare chance to hear from the woman who wrote a brilliant story of an important, forgotten legacy. October 1st is UK National Poetry Day and in celebration, we are delighted to present a poem recently composed by poet Charlotte Pearl @bycharlotteactually, as part of our recent event with Yard-O-Led @yardoled in London. Following our spring excursion to the Yard-O-Led workshop in Birmingham, we were hosted in their Piccadilly store for an evening of silvercraft and penmanship. Conversations on jewellery prompted hand written notes, which we wrote with our beautiful pens. In turn, the words we left were then compiled to create our own Gem X poem with Charlotte's Gathered Words practice. The power of transformable jewellery. On Monday, Bentley & Skinner hosted @gemxclub at our Piccadilly showroom for an event exploring jewels designed to be worn in more ways than one. Led by @ilias_kapsalis, the morning looked at the craft and ingenuity behind jewels with hidden versatility: a brooch that becomes a a pendant, a necklace that becomes a brooch, a ring that becomes a bracelet, and a tiara that becomes a necklace. Guests also had the opportunity to see how our aquamarine brooch - worn by Lady Edith in @downtonabbey_official ‘The Grand Finale’ - could transform into both a ring and a necklace, offering a close-up, hands-on, look at pieces rarely seen in this way. Jewelry as an art form has always excelled within storytelling on stage. With this sentiment in mind, as the velvet curtain was lowered for the annual summer break, London’s Royal Opera House @royalballetandopera generously hosted Gem X for an indulgent sneak-peek-behind-the-scenes tour of tutus and tiaras… Led on a walking tour through the foyer, theatre and eventually behind the scenes, we wandered through the theatre, viewed a rehearsal for a fleeting opera production and handled authentic archival costumes before being presented with extraordinary original prints and jewellery drawings from the art department. Although our focus was the ROH’s sumptuous productions, our wonderful host Bryan laced every detail with jewelry themed details  of the greats that graced the stage. Think stories of the diamonds woven into the hair of singer Adelina Patti, handling the gemstone themed costumes of Balanchine's “Jewels” production of 2004 and the presentation of rhinestone headpieces and collars from “Swan Lake.” Photography was limited but our access certainly wasn’t and what an enchanting afternoon it was. A Thursday Throwback from one of our London events this summer ☀️ Treasure House @treasurehousefair is always a treasure hunt through Chelsea and despite the soaring temperatures through the British capital, Gem X London took our annual jewelry walk through the fair, loupes in hand.  Hosted at several different jewelry booths including Wartski @wartski1865, Koopman @koopmanrareart, SJ Phillips @s_j_phillips, Greens of Cheltenham @greensjewels and Sandra Cronan @sandracronan, members gathered around to hear about the highlights of the fair and pick out our personal favourites. Katherine Purcell of Watski generously greeted us for a talk on a 16th-century cabinet painting of Lady Arbella Stuart by Nicholas Hilliard and an extraordinary enamelled and cabochon-studbed mirror from the court of Louis XIV, whilst Kimberly @kimberleyfinejewels of Koopman Rare Art presented rare antique pink diamonds, signed vintage necklaces and an endless supply of extraordinary emeralds from a range of different periods. Fast becoming a social season highlight, Treasure House brings together the best of the jewelry world in the most beautiful of settings - always better enjoyed together. There are jewels and there are GCDC-award-winning jewels.The distinction was revealed to Gem X London with a private viewing of the jewels of Janet Barber @jbarbergoldsmith, FIPG Goldsmith & Silversmith and it's true what they say; the devil is really in the detail. @ Hosted in Soho, members had the privilege - and absolute pleasure - of an around-table-viewing and handling of Janet’s bejewelled works of art. Accompanied by her formative sketches and colour palette, Janet explained the evolution of her design process and how her perception of movement, shape and proportion seen in the natural world informed the creation of her jewels. And our highlight? The elegant articulation of The Moth Orchid brooch, rendered in anodised niobium, lightweight titanium and synthetic sapphires. The Downey Feather Brooch, crafted with laser welding, engraving and wire drawing using anodised titanium, and finished with approximately 3,000 diamonds and mother-of-pearl inlay. The Synthesis earrings, formed of irregular, geometric silver lozenge drops, coated in a stunning ombre of synthetic sapphires, glittering in the sunlight. Jewels like these are true creations of imagination and often are united with their custodian upon completion. Our group viewing was a rare treat for jewelry patrons and in turn, we wantot extend our endless gratitude to Janet for sharing these jewels - and this moment in time - with our community. #gemxlondon #gemx #gemxclub #janetbarberjewelry taken in London, United Kingdom by @gemxclub
