It’s my birthday and I’m not even really supposed to be here. My parents had me accidentally very late in life and this was the 1980s so I was expected to come out as a sack of hair and loose teeth. My parents also wanted a boy and to name me Shawn.
If average life expectancy is to be believed, I’m about half way done with everything. I’m not sure where I thought I would be at this point, but it wouldn’t have mattered what I thought because it’s never like that. A lot of times it’s worse. A lot of times it’s much, much better. I never thought I would have achieved all that I have only because I failed even more. I never thought I would find myself taking care of my Dad, making sure he gets home safe whenever he’s ready. And I definitely never thought I would have such incredible people who will eventually do the same for me.
What is sticking with me today is this: “Life isn’t perfect but it is full of perfect moments.” All I can do now, on the back half of this whole thing, is be quiet enough to recognize those moments but loud enough to remember them. Thank you to everyone who has ever shown me kindness and grace, especially those who did so when I didn’t really deserve it. Now please go listen to Soccer Moms: Birthday Edition. by @genelafunk
