What if your child isn’t actually “behind”?

One of the ideas that really stayed with me from my conversation with Thuy Pham is how misleading a year level can be when we’re trying to understand what a child actually knows.

A child might be strong in one area of maths, missing a foundation in another, and working well beyond their year level somewhere else. But when we only look at where they’re supposed to be, it can be easy to turn a specific knowledge gap into a much bigger label.

Thuy has spent 25 years working with tens of thousands of students, and in this episode we unpack how finding those missing “rungs” in a child’s learning ladder can change the way we understand a child who is struggling.

If you’re a parent or educator, this conversation is worth watching.

▶️ Watch Episode 9 of Generation Inspired with Thuy Pham on YouTube, and subscribe to the channel for more conversations challenging how we think about education and the future of our kids. Link in bio.

We group children by age, put them in the same classroom and expect them to learn at roughly the same pace. But that’s not actually how kids learn!!

A child can be advanced in one area and missing crucial foundations in another. When we teach to age instead of readiness, are we really meeting the child where they are, or simply asking them to keep up with the system?

In Episode 9 of Generation Inspired, I speak with Thuy Pham, Founder of Spectrum Tuition, about what happens when we stop assuming age equals learning level and start looking at what a child is actually ready to learn.

🎧 Watch or Listen to Episode 9 now and tell me in the comments: Should children be taught based more on readiness than age?

YOUR CHILD ISN’T A YEAR LEVEL!

We group children by age, move them through the same curriculum at roughly the same pace, and when they struggle, it can be easy to assume they’re simply “behind.”

But what if they’re not lacking ability at all? What if they’re just missing a few critical pieces of the learning puzzle?

In Episode 9 of Generation Inspired, I sit down with Thuy Pham, founder of Spectrum Tuition and Spectrum Books, who has spent 25 years working with tens of thousands of students. We talk about why a child can be years ahead in one area and have gaps in another, why pushing harder isn’t always the answer, and what can happen when we meet children where they actually are in their learning.

This conversation made me think deeply about the limitations of one-size-fits-all education, and what could change if we stopped assuming age tells us everything we need to know about a child’s ability.

🎧 Episode 9 is out now. Listen to my full conversation with Thuy Pham on Generation Inspired. Link in bio, or DM SCHOOL to get the episode links.

I keep coming back to this question.

If we were designing schools from scratch today, knowing what we know about children, would we build them the same way?

Would every child spend most of their day in the same type of classroom? Would we expect them to move through learning at the same pace? Or would we create more space for movement, nature, collaboration, quiet, creativity and simply stepping away when things feel like too much?

I’d love to see wellbeing spaces become as normal in schools as libraries and sports facilities. Not because something has gone wrong, but because children are human. Sometimes they need somewhere to pause, reset and reconnect.

Maybe the future of education isn’t just about changing what we teach. Maybe we also need to rethink the environments we’re asking children to learn in.

If you could redesign a school from scratch, what would you change first?

YOUR CHILD’S STRENGTHS MIGHT NOT SHOW UP AT SCHOOL!

I think this is something more parents need to hear.

Your child might not be the one getting the highest marks. They might struggle to sit still, hate exams or switch off completely in certain subjects. And when so much of their childhood is spent at school, it can be very easy for those struggles to become the story they start telling themselves about who they are.

But school only gives us one window into a child 💜

The kid who struggles academically might be incredible at connecting with people. They might be the one who naturally takes the lead, comes up with wild ideas, makes things with their hands, notices when someone is left out, finds a solution nobody else considered or can convince everyone else to get behind an idea.

They might be creative, resourceful, empathetic, entrepreneurial, courageous or brilliant under pressure.

And some of those strengths may never appear on a report card.

As a mum, I think one of our jobs is to notice them anyway. To pay attention to what our children gravitate towards, what comes naturally to them, what they can spend hours doing and the moments when we see them completely come alive.

Because those things matter too.

I want my kids to work hard at the things they find difficult. But I never want what they struggle with at school to become louder than what they’re brilliant at in life.

Our job isn't just to help children improve their weaknesses. It’s to help them discover their strengths- And honestly, this belief sits at the heart of why I’m building Tomorrow Hub.

I want to create more space for young people to discover what they're capable of, especially the things that don't always show up on a report card 💜

There’s a group of parents I keep thinking about: the accidental homeschoolers.

The parents who never planned to homeschool. Who wanted school to work. Who tried different approaches, had the conversations, looked for support and kept hoping something would change. Until eventually, continuing as they were no longer felt like the right option for their child.

From the outside, we might call that a choice. But for some families, it can feel much more like running out of choices.

This isn’t about homeschooling being better, or schools and teachers being the problem. It makes me wonder whether we need more flexibility in how we think about education, so fewer families have to reach breaking point before a child can learn in a way that works for them.

I’d love to hear from the accidental homeschoolers. Did you choose homeschooling, or did you feel like homeschooling chose you?

One of the things I loved most about our time in Bali was watching my kids discover that learning doesn’t have to look one particular way 💜

For a few weeks, my son & daughter went to Empathy School in Ubud. No uniforms. No shoes. Open-wall classrooms surrounded by nature. And a very different rhythm to the education they were used to back home.

They built solar-powered cars in robotics, made chocolate from scratch, tried traditional Balinese wood carving and created products to sell at their own market stall. English, maths and science were still being learned, but through projects, experiences and actually doing things.

And I think that experience gave them something bigger than what was on the curriculum. They had to adapt. Try things they’d never done before. Learn alongside different people, in a different culture, in a completely different environment. They got to see that there is more than one way to learn, and more than one environment in which they could thrive.

That’s something I’ve carried with me ever since. We don’t necessarily need to choose one education model over another, but I do think there’s enormous value in giving our kids opportunities to experience learning differently.

Sometimes changing the environment shows us something about our children we couldn’t see before.

We ask young people what subjects they’re choosing, what they want to study and what they want to be when they grow up.

But how can they possibly know if they haven’t had enough opportunities to discover what genuinely interests them?

I don’t think every child needs to find one big “passion” and turn it into a career. I do think they need space to explore. To try things. To get things wrong. To follow their curiosity and notice what gives them energy.

Maybe preparing kids for their future isn’t just about helping them become employable. It’s helping them know themselves well enough to choose a future that actually feels like theirs 💚
