We’re very excited to announce our long-awaited 30th Birthday Programme 🥳

#1996 brings a week of workshops and events towards a continually evolving exhibition, drawing on our three decades of archive.

In light of the recent blows to the Scottish Arts sector, developing our 30th Birthday programme has given us space to reflect on labour, institutional memory and the precarious running of an artist-run initiative.

Whether you’re new to Generator or ex-committee, friend of Generator or long-time visitor - we’d love to see you on any day of the week!

A detailed programme overview will follow shortly … Keep your eyes peeled 👀 let’s take this as an opportunity to come together and uplift artist-run organisations taken in Generator Projects by @generatorprojects

Yesterday the UK Supreme Court handed down a ruling that has stated that sex is assigned at birth and immutable, regardless of reality exemplified by the widely documented lived experiences of trans and intersex people. This ruling is meant to excludes trans women from both recognition and protection under the law as women, and can be broadly applied to all transgender individuals. This is the latest in a series of moves to rapidly and efficiently erode the legally enshrined safety and validity of trans peoples that has existed for the past 15 years. Even with the protections offered to us by the 2010 equality act we still experience violence on a personal and institutional level as a result of being trans.

Generator Projects staunchly rejects this interpretation of the law and vehemently condemns the judges that unanimously made this ruling, their choice to exclude any trans people from speaking as part of the case & for their of intense moral or philosophical bankruptcy. This ruling will come with a body count.

The nature of the law is to represent the all peoples.
But the voices of trans people, particularly trans women, have been absent from all major forms of this public discourse. Whilst a small group funded by immense amounts of private wealth have been given the privilege of being heard, so we urge all other cultural institutions to actively platform and give space to trans people.

The ‘trans debate’ echoes a pattern of history similar to the ‘Jewish question’ - this ambiguity over the rights of a group to exist can only end in the public and later private erasure of that group. So we state that trans women are women unequivocally and without question. We ask everyone who is part of the wider generator community to continue listen to and speak up for our trans colleagues across the UK.

Generator will remain a site that is inclusive of trans people in every facet of our policy, programming & community.

In solidarity,

Persephone Russell

Image description in altext. The image is a colored pencil drawing that features both a drawing of a dove and text. At the centre, a purple and green dove is depicted flying freely. The text, written in capital green letters, states "SCOTTISH CULTURE STANDS UNITED, WE ENDORSE THE CALL FROM PACBI." The word "PACBI" appears in the center in large red letters. Below this, additional text in smaller green letters reads "THE PALESTINIAN CAMPAIGN FOR THE ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL." The background is multicoloured and represents movement and the sky. The drawing conveys a sense of artisanal craftsmanship and is a declaration of support for a specified political cause. by @generatorprojects

Our archive has been overflowing with excess posters and handouts for years, so we thought we’d do something about it! We’ve teamed up with the wonderful artist Matt Ledger (@mattpopppp) for an evening of collage transformation; turning the old into something new.

Drop in any time between 4pm - 9pm on Thursday 8th October and join us in getting little cuttings of paper all over the floor and glue on your fingers ✂️🖍️ You’ll also be welcome to pilfer as many of our excess posters as you like for your bedroom wall.

Free, all materials provided.
All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

See you there! x

The Party as Radical Social Engagement
As part of Generator Projects’ 30th anniversary celebrations, this workshop reflects on the archive as a starting point for thinking critically about the party as a political form of community and exchange. Drawing on documentation of past Generator parties and gatherings, we will talk about what happens when artists make spaces for people to come together. What kinds of relationships, communities and forms of exchange can emerge through collective celebration?

How does the party disrupt everyday structures, create alternative forms of participation, and make space for pleasure, experimentation and collective agency? The disco ball will act as a point of departure for these discussions, a symbol of nightlife and celebration, we will use it as thinking object through which ideas of visibility, reflection, spectatorship, collectiveness and shared experience could be traced. The sparkle and fragmented reflections of a disco ball offer a way of thinking about the party not as a one-off event, but as a constellation of encounters, bodies and histories. Participants are invited to embellish small objects with mirror tile and shiny gems to create their own reflective objects. This process of making will sit alongside discussion of the archive, considering how objects can hold social histories, how celebration can function as a form of cultural practice, and how the traces of past gatherings might inform the ways we come together now. The workshop is an opportunity to look backwards through Generator’s archive while asking what the party might still make possible: as a space of connection, resistance, collective imagination and radical social engagement.

Tomorrow, Friday 25 September, artist Adrian Pepe will discuss his practice and the work he made for Everything for Everybody @generatorprojects with @gerschultzj and @monotown for our closing event, 14:00-16:00. All welcome!

Adrian Pepe is a Honduran fibre artist based in Lebanon. His artistic practice is an ongoing investigation into process and material. Through his work, he interweaves nature and culture to create objects as tools to enable an open discourse on materiality, our morphing cultural landscape, and the present condition. Pepe’s work is rooted in textiles, spanning site-specific installations to durational performances. By directly engaging with the sentient providers of raw materials — whether plant or animal — Pepe forges relational ties that manifest in objects and events imbued with artistry, sweat, perspiration, mythology, and symbolism; transforming acts of making into speculative, embodied rituals that test and extend our understanding of material agency, ecological intimacy, and the poetics of labor.

Supported by the St Andrews Centre for Art and Politics, the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Centre for Global (Post)socialisms, Southeast, Central, and East European Studies.

Final Hour Log – Handala
⏰Sunday 27 September 2026, 12-3.30pm
📍Generator Projects, Dundee

⛵Witness the last hour of the humanitarian vessel Handala, before interception by Israel in international waters on July 26, 2025.

This is a free-entry, drop in screening of one film from the evening Gaza Transmits programme, showing on a loop. Drop in throughout the afternoon.

👋🪡 📚It’s also a relaxed opportunity to meet local organisers, take part in our collective embroidery project, sewing in solidarity with Palestinian health-workers, and take some time out to read zines, books and other texts relating to Palestinian history and resistance.

🎬About the film by @firas.shehade

Final Hour Log – Handala reconstructs the last hour of the humanitarian vessel Handala, launched by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) and named after the iconic figure created by Palestinian artist Naji al-Ali in the late 1960s. Handala, a barefoot refugee child with his back turned to the viewer, symbolizes Palestinian resistance, exile, and the right of return.

The vessel was intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters on July 26, 2025. It was sailing to break Israel’s illegal blockade on Gaza, imposed since 2007. The crew faced surveillance, electronic jamming, intimidation, forcible boarding, and abduction.

Composed primarily of livestreamed footage, the film documents a civilian act of solidarity and defiance, preserving what was meant to be erased. An act of witness and rupture against the enforced silence, an act to break the siege on Gaza.

🙌 Thank you to @generatorprojects and @dundeechangemakers for making this event possible.

➡️Generator Projects is just off Perth Road at Mid Wynd Industrial Estate.

📺Gaza Transmits is part of @falastinfilmfest in Dundee & North East Fife from 24-27 September. Celebrate Palestinian cinema and culture in a programme of films, talks, workshops and performance co-curated by @artsworkersforpalestinedundee. taken in Generator Projects by @generatorprojects
