On its first journey down the Jonesboro subdivision, UP 4014 thunders across Crooked Creek in Humphrey AR, heading for a servicing stop in Pine Bluff before ending the day in North Little Rock. Had a good day despite all the insanity.

An F/A-18E Super Hornet from the fabulous US Navy Blue Angels drops down to the deck, screaming toward show-center and a 6-way cross with the other Angels during the Loop Break Cross at the 2024 Spirit of St Louis airshow!

With its 6 chime roaring, CP 2816 thunders out over Caddo Lake in Mooringsport LA! This was the best shot of the day, as the sun started to turn against the train almost immediately. Had a blast chasing this beauty!

Fall is in full swing on the CPKC Shreveport Sub as a northbound tanker train crawls upgrade towards the summit of Rich Mountain with a pair of BNSF run-through motors on the head end. Fitting to have orange leaders on a rainy autumn day like this.

Another collection of locomotives from various shortlines and regionals across the country. I love seeing the variety in color that these railroads have, something that's sorely lacking from the big Class 1s nowadays.

Photo 1: Basking in the morning sun, Indiana Northeastern SD40-2M 3084 idles in Edon, Ohio. The Indiana Northeastern rosters a variety of EMDs, from early first-gen high hoods to SD40s to ex-UP SD70Ms. The 3084 was built as a straight SD40 in 1966, starting out as Canadian Pacific 5527. It was passed to numerous leasing companies before winding up on the INER.

Photo 2: Situated out of the small mountain town of Staunton, Virginia, the Buckingham Branch operates the former C&O Greenbrier Subdivision, largely rostering second-generation geeps like GP40 7 here. This unit, too, was built in 1966, this time for the Rio Grande as the 3062.

Photo 3: Richmond Pacific SW1200 85 rests at the Knoxville Locomotive Works in Knoxville, Tennessee. This unit is far from home rails, as the Richmond Pacific is a terminal railroad working the wharves of Richmond, California. 85 was built in 1965 for the Southern Pacific and still retains the housing for the SP's extensive light packages on the nose and cab.

Photo 4: This locomotive looks like something out of a fantasy model railroad, but it is, in fact, real. The reborn Rock Island has a surprisingly varied collection of motive power, the largest of which being a former Chicago NorthWestern C41-8 that the Rock picked up from Canadian National and beautifully dressed in the original Rock's red and yellow scheme. Had the Rock survived its bankruptcy, it's not hard to imagine this look being the norm.

Photo 5: The Pinsly Corporation had a small collection of shortlines across the country, a portion of which were the various branches of the Arkansas Midland Railroad scattered throughout the Natural State. Among the AKMD's roster were a bunch of Ex-Illinois Central Paducah geeps, one of which was GP8 400, originally built as Illinois Central GP9 9044 in 1954. The AKMD was acquired by G&W in 2014, and the 400 was sentenced to death by the EPA in 2023.

One of my favorite aspects of going to an airshow is getting the displays arriving and departing the show grounds before and after the show, as it gives you a good look at some rare aircraft that you wouldn't otherwise see flying during the weekend. In this case, it was USMC F-5N Tiger II 761546 from VMFT-401 dropping in Friday evening before the 2024 Spirit of St Louis Airshow. I think the F5s are an underrated airframe, performing necessary adversary training for pilots and looking spectacular while doing it!

EMDs of different eras meet at Little Rock Union Station as an inbound UP freight passes the Little Rock & Western local, waiting for a signal to proceed into UP's NLR yard. This shot cannot be replicated today as the LRWN interchange was moved away from the blind curve to the Arkansas River bridge in 2024.

Another group of old steam locomotives that reside in small museums and parks across the US, as well as one just across the border! I need to go travel again soon to replenish my supply of steam photos!

Photo 1: Coos Bay Lumber Co 2-8-2 104 is a stocky little mikado that served its entire life in the forests of Oregon before being sent for display in North Bend. In 2001, the locomotive was moved to a small railroad museum in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Photo 2: Williams, Arizona is the gateway to the Grand Canyon and the home base of the Grand Canyon Railway. Two steam locomotives sit around the entrance to their station, one being this oddball from Colorado. Manitou & Pikes Peak is a famous cog railroad that climbs up to the top of Pikes Peak. The railroad shut down in 2017 and some of the equipment was sold off, but little 0-4-2 Cog number 4 was retained by the owner of the M&PP and temporarily moved to the Grand Canyon, owned by the same person.

Photo 3: This Mikado came to the Texas & Pacific through interesting circumstances. Originally built for the Fort Worth & Denver as number 410, this engine has an obvious CB&Q look to it. Its claim to fame came about because of the T&P's haste to dieselize, as when the Red River in Louisiana flooded, diesels could not operate in the floodwaters. Both the T&P and parent road MP had scrapped all their steam already, so they had to search surrounding roads for an operational steam engine in the late 50s. They found and bought FW&D 410 in 1958, renumbering it 400, and used it primarily for flood duty. Finally retired in 1963, the 400 was donated to Marshall, Texas, and sits alongside the massive T&P depot in town.

Photo 4: This rather bare-bones tank-less tank engine is Marble Cliff Quarries 0-4-0T 12. A 1916 product of Alco, this switcher resides in front of a local trucking company near the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

Photo 5: One of many locomotives under the ownership of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, this little 4-4-0 has had a rich full life. Built for the Savannah & Western railway in 1891, it soon after came under ownership of the Central of Georgia. After decades of running with CofG, the locomotive was leased by @genericrail

USAAF B-25J Mitchell 43-35972 "Maid in the Shade" (N125AZ) roars off the runway at Thaden Field in Bentonville, Arkansas, during a week of rides for the public at KVBT. This bird is unusual among the remaining flying Mitchells in that it is a legitimate combat veteran, flying 15 missions over Italy in the later half of 1944, mainly against railroad infrastructure. After the war, she was recalled for staff and training duties until being retired in 1958. Later, she was converted into an agricultural sprayer and eventually wound up in the hands of the CAF!

Fall is in full swing in the Smokies as Great Smoky Mountain Railroad GP38-3 1009 leads an eastbound excursion train out of Bryson City, North Carolina. A former GP35 of Pennsylvania RR vintage, the unit was painted up as GSMR's Veterans unit in a scheme very reminiscent of another vets motor on big yellow. 1009 didn't last long on the GSMR, being sold to the Pickens Railway in 2025.

The fallen flags continue to roam, and I'll continue to post them! Another batch of road names known only by what they left behind. The rust and repaints are thick, but some good railroad finds can still be found out there if you look hard!

Railroads aren't the only transportation companies to celebrate America's 250th anniversary! Earlier this year, Allegiant Airlines dressed Airbus A320-200 N256NV up for the Semiquincentennial, and we caught it on its first visit to KLIT since getting its patriotic dip! On a clear blue day, AAY1242 departs Adams Field for a hop over to Orlando Sanford International.
