All good things must come to a…new beginning.
This couch has seen 3 years of laughter, tears, wine spills, friendships formed, collaborations finalized, and realizations about what it looks like to build something more than a business - and today, from the couch, we’re announcing our goodbye to the version of Género Neutral that you’ve known since March 2021, as we plan to close our physical space at 1816 Sunset Blvd. While navigating some of the toughest months we’ve seen personally and professionally, we’ve surrendered to the uphill battle of keeping afloat a small business in a sea of fast fashion, deep discounts, and chain retailers that have the funds our self-sustained pockets can’t (and won’t) compete with. This might come as a surprise to our community, as we’ve done our best to keep the energy flowing even in uncertain times; but we’re not the first and not alone in succumbing to the way things just are now. It’s been hell. It’s been sad. It is, sad. There’s a lot more we could say, but it still wouldn’t encapsulate the gravity of the unique experiences we’ve been blessed to take away with us. The friendships we’ve made, brands we’ve seen bloom, faces we’ve seen light up, and dreams we’ve had for this different kind of shop have sustained us. We’re indebted to the energy that community - in all its forms - has created and inspired in us. In order to keep GNLA the light, bright, and special entity it’s been for us, we’re refocusing our efforts into letting it have a life outside these walls; an energy that could only have existed by doing things the way we did - the risky way - with our focus on the in-person experience and building something from the ground up. we’re still buzzing from the magic of Saturday’s celebration of Siempre Juntos, an opportunity for us to come together like we did for 3 beautiful years on Sunset :) our biggest thanks to each and every one of you who showed up to honor the special energy that this community creates - showing up as your sexiest, authentic selves! thank you @latimesimage for always elevating our collective voices and the cultures we celebrate; thank you to @ditroitdtla for being our incredible host for the evening, and to @casamata for being our partner in making this special celebration happen 💚 we’re so excited to bring this spirit of togetherness forward in our next chapter of GNLA, and can’t wait to share what’s next!

On Saturday, Image co-hosted a party in memory of Género Neutral, the beloved retail shop in Echo Park that closed earlier this year. To mark the end of an era, Ashley SP (@__a.sp__), one of the co-owners of the shop, wrote this beautiful piece, which is also a celebration of what’s to come with @generoneutral. as we’ve been navigating the news of our closure becoming public knowledge, we’ve still found it hard to ask for help, or have conversations around what’s needed to see us through the other side of this transition. our goal has always been to create a space that reflects the love we have for bringing people together + the importance of community. this closure feels similarly to what it was like preparing to open the shop; full of labor, financial expense, and uncertainty. our dear friend Javi put together this GoFundMe to help us close this chapter of GNLA and set us up for the possibilities of what’s next. if you’ve ever enjoyed our therapy couch, our free-for-all parties, what we’ve stood for, felt seen, felt connected to, felt anything in these last 3 years because of GN/us, we’d be humbly grateful for anything you might be able to contribute. the link to donate is in our bio.
