Vuslat (๐˜ท๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด-๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฉ๐˜ต): reunion; the end of separation.

The Vuslat Foundation takes its name from our founder, Vuslat Dogฬ†an, and from a word whose meaning reaches beyond easy translation. Vuslat has its origins in Arabic, derived from wusฬฃla (ูˆูุตู’ู„ูŽุฉ)โ€”connection, joining, union. It entered Turkish (and Ottoman Turkish) to describe a profound meeting, a reunion.

In Sufi tradition, ๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต names a homecoming: the soulโ€™s return after a long separation, a reunion with what we belong to. And this is the ground beneath our work. ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  is not simply โ€œbetter communication.โ€ It is a practice of reception, of returning to one another with fewer defenses, fewer assumptions, and more willingness to be changed by what we hear.

After twenty editions, our newsletter has come full circle. Its new name, ๐•๐”๐’๐‹๐€๐“ โ€” ๐€ ๐‰๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐ง ๐‘๐ž๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ง, returns to the simplest truth behind this foundation: reunion through listening.

The Generous Listening Emotional Support Groups, launched in response to the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake, provide a structured space where women affected by trauma can share their experiences, find connection, and begin their healing journey.

Through the power of generous listening, these groups foster empathy, understanding, and resilienceโ€”transforming isolation into belonging and strengthening community bonds. By prioritizing listening as a tool for recovery, we create an environment where trauma is acknowledged, voices are heard, and healing becomes possible.

Change does not always arrive loudly. ๐ŸŒฑ

A bird becomes less common. Summers lengthen. A familiar tree no longer flowers at the same time. The night grows brighter and quieter in ways we struggle to name.

Attention is one way of keeping a record.
What has the living world around you been losing slowly enough to escape notice?

There is a moment in conversation when the rehearsed answer falls away.

Anna Deavere Smith describes listening for that shift: the point at which someone stops simply responding and begins to speak from somewhere more alive, more particular, more fully their own.

Perhaps generous listening begins there too, in staying long enough for the first answer to give way to something deeper.

Every conversation can teach us something.
If we listen long enough to learn.

Teams rarely say everything in the meeting itself.

Concerns often arrive later, in a one-to-one conversation, a follow-up message, or once the consequences have become difficult to ignore.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต asks leaders and managers to notice how much of a teamโ€™s honest thinking reaches the formal room, and how much has to find another route.

The aim is not to monitor informal conversation. It is to examine the conditions leaders create.
โ€ข Which questions invite candour?
โ€ข Which responses close it down?
โ€ข What does the team already know but hesitate to say in front of those making the decision?

For one week, notice what reaches you after the meeting. Then ask what might have made it possible to say earlier.

๐Ÿ“ฐ The Listening Edit
Noteworthy writing on listening, attention and human connection.

In a recent essay for the @financialtimes, columnist Enuma Okoro begins with her own unease after turning to a chatbot with a personal problem, then widens the question through loneliness, friendship, art and solitude.
One idea stays with us: loneliness is not always about being alone. It can also be the feeling of being with others and still not feeling heard.

Okoro offers a simple counterpoint: regular, undistracted conversation. No multitasking. No optimisation. Just showing up for one another.

As technology becomes increasingly available to listen, what forms of human attention do we want to protect?
Enuma Okoro, โ€œWhy are we not talking to one another?โ€, Financial Times, June 2026.

The body reacts before the mind explains. A tightening in the chest, a held breath, a pull toward something or away from it. ๐Ÿ’ญ

By the time we have words for what we feel, we have often already tidied it, softened it, argued ourselves out of it. The first response is rawer, and usually more honest.

This week, try to catch that first signal before the mind translates it into something more acceptable. Your body may be telling you something you have not let yourself hear.

#ListeningHumor of the day ๐Ÿ’ญ

Tuning out of a conversation is one thing. Tuning out of your own sentence is a whole new frontier.

Listening to yourself: harder than it sounds.

What becomes audible when the surrounding noise falls away?

Maya Angelou speaks of quietude as a place in which we might hear something deeper. For some, that may be understood as God. For others, intuition, conscience, wisdom, meaning, or simply a part of ourselves that everyday life makes difficult to hear.

The language may differ. The invitation is remarkably universal: become quiet enough to notice what speaks when everything else stops competing for your attention.

Some disagreements continue long after the facts have been exhausted.

We may still be trying to prove that we were right, that our intentions were good, that the other person misunderstood, or that our pain came first.

The conversation remains active, but listening has stopped.
What might become possible if the need to win gave way, briefly, to the need to understand?
