Today I celebrated my first Mother’s Day.

Not because I had a baby…
but because I adopted a teenager while still in my 20s.

We met Kamdin through connections from an emergency shelter in Austin my husband and I volunteer in and given his sensitive story, he needed a place to stay.

At first, we were just opening the doors of my home to a brave asylum seeker from Iran. But he opened the doors to his hurt, past, and trauma. A few months in, the call from God was clear. He was to be our son.

So here I am. Redefining motherhood through this sweet, grown, bearded boy who calls me “Mom” and is soon to have our last name.

I realize how crazy, unexpected, and honestly weird it may look, but that’s motherhood, right?

In a way this journey has become even more sacred for us both because Kamdin was abandoned by his biological mom at 3 years old. We both get to figure this out together.

It’s Messy. Holy. Healing. Sometimes hilarious.

And while I could have never imagined this (honestly, it feels like a movie plot sometimes), I wouldn’t have it any other way. by @genesisarlette

My medical history said one thing. God said another. 💛

Auggie and I have been married almost 8 years. For most of that time, having a baby wasn’t really something we thought about — doctors had always said it wasn’t possible for us, and that even if it was, it would be a long and difficult journey. Last year, my health took a big hit, and my uterine surgery basically closed any door that was still open. While this could be heartbreaking for many, we were at complete peace with it. This felt like it was simply part of our story, especially given our call to adopt.

But when Auggie graduated with his PhD and Kamdin got into UTSA, we sat down as a family and prayed about what God had for us as we continued to grow our family.

We said: Lord, we’re going to pursue another adoption anyway. But if you have a giant plot twist planned with a biological baby before we do that, let your will be done.

His answer was immediate.
