🐲 HOW TO PLAY Wu 🐲

Compete in a clash of the Five Chinese Elements!

🎴 Combo your Cards!
In this elemental hand management game, play (and conserve!) your cards strategically to win Gold Ingots!

All players start with a hand of 8 cards, which they view privately. On your turn, you choose whether to Play or Pass. To Play, form a Set of cards from your hand, that is the same or next Element as what was just played. Your Set must also be of the same or higher level than what was just played.

If you are unable to Play, or want to conserve cards, you may Pass. Take the top 2 cards of the deck and add them to your hand. Once you Pass, you are out of that Round. All other players continue, until only 1 player is left (i.e. all other players Passed). That player wins the Round, gains 1 Gold Ingot, and starts the next Round.

🐲 Unleash epic Beasts!
Guarding each element is one of five legendary Beasts of Chinese mythology. Revered across China, Japan, and Korea, they appear on palace walls, temple rooftops, and imperial armour as symbols of protection and cosmic order.

In the game, these Beasts are Wild cards that can represent any number for their respective Element. Additionally, if you form a Wild Pair (2 of the same Wild card), that is the highest level Set in the game.

⭐ Win Gold Ingots!

WERBUNG | PERANAKAN: TILES AND TACTICS – ERSTEINDRUCK 🧁

👥 2–5 Personen

Schaut gerne dort vorbei!

🌺 Peranakan: Tiles and Tactics 🌺

This was one of those games we were able to learn incredibly quickly and just start playing. Within about 10–15 minutes of opening the rulebook, we were up and running.

At its core, Peranakan is a light tile-placement and set-collection game where you’re trying to collect complete sets of four different Kueh, traditional sweet treats. The player with the most complete sets wins.

⭐ Wow, this game is beautiful! The colors are bright and cheerful, the neoprene mat looks great on the table, and the screen-printed wooden Nyonyas and Babas are especially charming.

⭐ We really enjoyed how the Nyonyas and Babas collect Kueh. A Nyonya waits until both her horizontal and vertical lines are filled, while a Baba waits until the tile he is standing on is completely surrounded. They then collect Kueh from matching-pattern tiles in their area. Once they collect, that piece is permanently removed from the game, creating a nice sense of timing and progression.

⭐ Set collection is something we already enjoy, and that really is the heart of this one. You’re constantly looking for ways to complete sets while also paying attention to which Kueh may disappear before your pieces get a chance to collect them.

⭐ We also appreciated that the rulebook takes time to introduce Peranakan culture and heritage, including the meaning behind the tile designs and the Kueh featured in the game.

Overall, Peranakan was a very enjoyable little game. The gorgeous mat, colorful tiles, and wooden Nyonyas and Babas give it a wonderful table presence, and we think this would be a great fit for a family game night.

🌺 Peranakan: Tiles and Tactics will also be at SPIEL Essen later this month!

Wu 🪙
“Match the Elements, Snatch the Gold!”

👥 3–6 Players
⏱️ 20 Minutes
🃏 Ladder Climbing

A ladder-climbing game where numbers don’t matter as much as you think!

Start with 8 cards and play sets that match or beat the previous one. The catch? You can only play the same element or the next element in the cycle! Can’t beat it? Draw 2 cards and you’re out of the round. Last player standing earns 1 point!

What makes this game interesting? The special cards!

🔹 Dual-element Cards: Two elements in one card! More flexibility, less luck.

🔹 Wild Cards: Can represent any number of their element. Save two for a Wild Pair, the strongest set in the game!

🔹 Ingot Cards: Fixed numbers and elements make them tricky to play, but finish with them and win to grab bonus gold ingots! 🪙

First to collect 5 gold ingots wins!

Here’s the funny part. Unlike most ladder-climbing games, numbers are only for making sets. A pair of 1s can beat a pair of 3s if the element rule allows it!

Experienced players might need to rewire their brains a little. Meanwhile, newcomers will struggle with one big question: When should I play my Wild Cards?! 🤯

Play them too early and someone might slap down a stronger set. Hold them too long and you might never get to use them!

If you enjoy games like Slave, Wu is a great little card game to bring to the table with friends or family.

Small box, simple rules, but add a little competition and some friendly trash talk, and things can get surprisingly spicy! 🔥

🀄 The tiles are beautiful, the kueh look delicious, and everyone is getting in each other’s way.

Peranakan: Tiles and Tactics is a tile-laying game inspired by Chinese Peranakan culture. Everyone adds to the same colourful mosaic, placing nyonyas and babas who collect kueh as the board fills up.

🍡 Choosing a tile isn’t only about finding the pattern you need. Its position also determines which kueh you take, and those two things don’t always match. Sometimes the perfect tile comes with a sweet you already have plenty of. A rather unfortunate problem to have when they all look this tasty.

🧩 Nyonyas collect from completed rows and columns, while babas look at the eight spaces around them. You can also stack tiles to replace existing patterns, so filling a space doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll stay that way.

🎨 The presentation is probably my favourite part. The batik-inspired neoprene playmat, decorative Peranakan patterns and illustrated kueh give the game plenty of character. The sweets are based on actual traditional kueh too, rather than being reduced to another handful of coloured cubes.

👀 The colourful board does get busy once the mosaic fills up, and those smaller kueh symbols aren’t always easy to check from across the table. We also wonder how much variety four patterns and two figure types will provide after many plays. The Peranakan culture comes through strongly in the artwork and background, but less in the decisions you’re making.

❤️ Overall, we enjoyed Peranakan. It’s easy to get into, and the combination of choosing tiles, collecting the right sweets and sharing one board gives you enough to think about without turning it into a long evening. You’re building something beautiful together. Keeping everyone else’s plans out of it is another matter.

👉 Going to Spiel Essen ’26? You can find Peranakan: Tiles and Tactics at Nekuma Studio in Hall 5, booth K415.

🏠 The prodigal son returns.

Swipe to read the Tail of Rats to Riches - It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions and episodes, so grab your popcorn and hang on tight 😝

🍪 I survived on £1 of Digestives biscuits every day for 6 weeks

Would have been so much more on-brand if I survived on cheese instead but oh well. When life gives you digestives, make a board game 😝

🔥 I've always held that the true value of business school doesn't come from the stuff they teach you - it comes from the people you meet:

Entrepreneurial young people with the will, the creativity, the sheer passion and grit to make a dent in the universe. 🚀

🥂 Accentuate - the company behind the viral hit sensation accent game that made it onto Dragon's Den and received investment from Peter Jones!

💸 John Lewis?!?! still pinching myself till today that we managed to get into their stores and shelves. The £3000 award from the university was sweet too :)

🐀 From Rats to Riches, back to Rats again.

As the Stoics would say, "Fortune gives and Fortune takes away." It's the circle of life.

🤩 13,000. Absolutely insane stuff, considering a big chunk of those years were during Covid - probably the worst conditions for a new board game to survive in.

💛 A true labour of love. You can think of the Founder's Edition as my "Taylor's Version" for Rats to Riches.

- Amantes de los juegos de colocación de losetas y control espacial con reglas ágiles;
- Jugadores que disfrutan de la recolección de sets y la interacción indirecta;

🎲 PERANAKAN TILES AND TACTICS 🥧
