POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Here is a quick look at my rating scale!

While I stick to the main categories, I do use half-stars for those "in-between" reads that deserve a little extra nuance. See below:

4.5 stars — Exceptional — Nearly flawless. It resonated deeply, though it fell just short of "Beyond Amazing."

3.5 stars — Above Average — Better than an average read, but not quite reaching 4 stars. by @genrehopperreads

Beyond the Bookshelves

We spend so much time talking about what I’m reading, but I figured that this was something fun to do! You can blame @sheaisreading for this non-bookish post😅🫶🏾

While my Kindle is basically an extension of my arm, when I actually put it down, you can usually find me:
📺 Binging too many tv series to name.
🕵🏾‍♀️ Deep diving into true crime podcasts.
🎄 Counting down the days until Christmas (yes, even in March).

I want to know more about YOU! What’s one "non-bookish" fact about yourself? Or better yet, which of these shows do you watch?👇🏾 A "Get to Know Me" bookstagram graphic titled "5 Non-Bookish Facts About Me" featuring a photo of Tammie smiling and holding a phone, with a soft, warm aesthetic. by @genrehopperreads

Can you guess the year?🤔🕵‍♂️

I saw @sheaisreading do this fun trend (credit to @cooks.reading.books for the original idea!) and I had to hop on it.
I’m sharing a few books that were released (first published) the same year I was born. Swipe through to see the titles. ➡️

Book Review

What to Expect
POV: First-person point of view through multiple narrators (primarily following Mitch)

Premise
In Sh*t Show by @osullivanauthor, we meet Mitch when he gets into a minor fender bender. This seemingly small incident triggers a series of unfortunate events that completely disrupt his life and peace of mind.

What I Liked
I really enjoyed how this story was constructed. Each shift in perspective was well-timed and kept the momentum moving smoothly. The story had good twists and kept me hooked. I had no choice but to keep turning the pages to figure out who was pulling the strings.

Amidst the chaos and entertainment, the story touches on ethics and morality, raising thought-provoking questions: Is there anything you wouldn't do for your family? What lines wouldn't you cross for the ones you love? What lengths would you go to protect them?

The Only Snag
The supporting cast has distinct personalities and motives, but I would have loved a bit more character development so the emotional or tragic moments would have a strong impact.

Verdict & Recommendation
It’s safe to say that Sh*t Show was not a shit show for me. This is a fantastic pick for readers looking for a fast-moving plot that isn’t complex or overly convoluted, and I will definitely be checking out more of Brian O'Sullivan's work in the future.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Rating Breakdown:
• Suspense/Pacing: 4/5
• Intrigue/Plot Complexity: 4/5
• Character Depth/Motivation: 4/5
• Twists/Surprises: 4/5
• Resolution/Satisfaction: 4/5

Huge thanks to @bookboundsarah for the tag!

One of my absolute favourite tropes is a good UNRELIABLE NARRATOR. Give me a protagonist who is lying to themselves, lying to the reader, or completely losing their grip on reality, and I am sold every single time. There is just something so satisfying about trying to piece together the truth when you can’t even trust the person telling you the story!

Book Review: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by @veschwab

🚨Spoiler ahead!

What to Expect
• Non-linear timeline
• Third-person POV
• Dual perspectives
• Short chapters

"What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?"

It’s only fitting that I start this review in the words of her father:

"Il était une fois..."

There was a girl who grew up in Villon, France, who:
▪ Loved drawing
▪ Loved the way her father told her stories
And after a trip to the market with her father, she realised that she loved freedom and just wanted... more. So she made a deal with, let's say, a supreme entity to live forever, and was cursed to be forgotten by everyone she met.

The story unfolds across multiple time jumps, taking us from the early 1700s to the present (2014). This allows me to witness Addie growing up and understand her need to be free, to live, to want more time. And from that point on, I truly felt like I was travelling the world with her, getting bite-sized experiences across continents…across centuries.

I thought we were only going to hear from Addie's perspective, but I was pleasantly surprised by the shift when she meets the one who remembers.

Henry’s perspective really helped me understand where he was coming from. I loved how they met, and I enjoyed reading about their time together.

There is a soft, reverent warmth to how Adeline views her father, which made the shift in the wooden ring's symbolism all the more poignant.

That brings me to the Darkness... I don’t think I hate him (it?) as much as I should. But I digress.

Overall, I liked how the author told the story. Schwab’s writing style is atmospheric and deeply intimate. In the book, on the day I dreaded most, she captured Henry's emotional state with effortless precision. I felt his grief, relief, love, and fear all at once.

The pacing was also great. Nothing dragged.

I rate this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Swipe through the slides for the full breakdown.

Recommended for:
▪ Anyone who loves character-driven historical fantasy with a touch of romance & low magic.
▪ Anyone interested in a story about identity, loneliness, memory, and what it means to leave a mark on the world.

ARC Book Review

Tropes
● Slow Burn
● Family Secrets
● Stalking
● Unreliable Narrator
● Small Town

What to Expect
● Believable FMC
● Long chapters (20 to 30 minutes)
● Ambiguous ending

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This is one of those books where I can't say much, to keep the review spoiler-free.

Early into the story, I found myself desperate for answers regarding the main character's potential kidnapping and the identity of her stalker. It created an urge to keep reading that I couldn't shake.

Every time I thought I had something figured out, this book proved me wrong. The unreliable narrator trope is done exceptionally well, but prepare for an ambiguous ending that will have you going over everything again in your head. You'll think you know what happened, but as time passes, your certainty will fade.

Content Warnings: Suicidal ideation, graphic violence, ocular trauma, gore.

Mini Book Review

I finally picked up Dawn by Octavia E. Butler!
Life is a little busy right now, so I only have a mini review in me today. 🙃

This book touches on many important topics: xenophobia, the importance of community and family, the simple fact that humans need each other, the impact of isolation, our hierarchical drive, gender dynamics, the terror and beauty of human nature, and the overall complexity of our humanity.
While I completely respect the depth of these themes, the execution (specifically the pacing and lack of payoff) didn't totally click with me.

Swipe through the slides to check out my full thoughts! I do plan to eventually see where this trilogy goes, so I will return to it in the future.
