Rilke’s words are a tender molding of the heart. I reach for this poetry collection whenever I feel soul-sodden and heart-heavy. It offers the gentlest reminder that I can exist as I am, that I am full of needs and that I am needed, too, even if only to instruct my own tired lungs to expand and release. In these poems, Rilke meditates on both the abundance and futility of being. There are grievances aired here not as protests, rather as kinship and acceptance that we are here to hurt and be distorted by life as much as we are here to bask in its arbitrary goodness; that we are the same as the laurel, the little sprout that fights to live through nature’s trials. Rilke’s words are a harvest ready to nurture and nourish; his main conviction being that everything is in us as we are in everything—abundant and small at once, as infinite and transient as love itself. He reminds us of grief’s necessity in shaping this life, that death—as in the end of anything—is life being received fully; that the way we find ourselves in loss shapes how we show up in love; that misery is often the way we rip ourselves apart from the world to make sense of our pain and in order to come together again. THE VALLEY IS ALIVE 🌳🐇 This book has returned me to the roots of my soul. Lord have mercy on me. Steinbeck’s writing is doing things to me, I don’t know how to behave!!! 🥵😶‍🌫️🫪 Turning the pages of Eden is simply satiating; the words meld into skin and crawl into bones, they drill something fruitful and feral inside. Steinbeck’s reflective prose is both celebratory and unforgiving of our boisterous nature which is to say that within humankind the facets of love, generosity, and affection will always be grander than our duplicity. Eden is infused with a meditative nature of natural observations: the valley speaks, sings, sorrows—she gives and she is merciful in spite of men’s greed and vile shortcomings. And the animals, even in passing, are no less being than humans; a reminder that we all make up this ecosystem entrusted with the fruition of life and the ultimate choice of goodness and survival, even at an impasse, even in the gutter. Timshel—thou mayest, from the ground towards the skies. I used to raise a dubious eyebrow whenever I saw yet another person say this book is like no other and I know now they were past even the territory of right and into a divine correctness. I am waxing poetic and clearly not an ounce of me can be normal about Eden. TL;DR Scroll through for a fraction of the quotes that gobsmacked me. Oh, a tiny book with a mighty heart will never not destroy me exactly as I beg to be destroyed in my reading. Small Things Like These instantly transports you to the dead of winter in 1980s Ireland, to the state of questioning one’s complicity in the evil systems designed by humankind which are sustained by society’s ignorance and deafening silence. We follow the quiet unfolding of an ordinary man meeting his contrariness during the late stages of the Magdalene Laundry schemes. I had no knowledge of the Magdalene Laundries beforehand but my rage needed no conjuring as the realities of these systems are still in place and in full force today (re: 🧊🍉🇮🇷🇨🇩🇸🇩) which violates human beings every day for simply existing. Written with succinct precision, the deliberation and care of Keegan’s prose gutted me to tears. She renders an atmosphere of introspection and profundity found in the small things. She asks what it means to break free from the comfort mold of our lives for the sake of others; that there is love rooted in us to push through the fear of resistance. Mostly, she desperately ponders: What am I for in this world if not for those who need me most? tl;dr A necessary read for all. by @gentlemoonpages

Happy New Year, dear friends 🌷 Day 2 of 2026. I stayed in, made myself a salmon hotpot and watched Perfect Days for the first time. Cried my little eyes out. Then this poem came to me most tenderly, promptly whetting my tear ducts again. Naturally, I had to put them together. Oh how I’ve missed doing poetry readings. Then to drive the knife home, I stumbled upon this quote from Dostoyevsky, a sentiment which the film explores. It utterly wrecked me and replenished me at once: “and i seem to have such strength in me now, that i think i could stand anything, any suffering, only to be able to say and to repeat to myself every moment, ‘i exist.’ in thousands of agonies- i exist. i’m tormented on the rack- but i exist! though i sit alone in a pillar- i exist! i see the sun, and if i don’t see the sun, i know it’s there. and there’s a whole life in that, in knowing that the sun is there.” Oh, words and stories. I’m so lucky to exist here, with you, to share in these illuminating pockets of joy and inspiration together. ⚠️ Z10n1st sentiments in A Little Life ⚠️ Please read through this post, take it into careful consideration, and share it widely. Thank you to Hannah (@backtoficti0n) for informing me of this matter and Diyan (@dearmoons_) with whom I was able to process my feelings on this with. ⚠️ Edit: Check out Linn’s post (@linoreads) highlighting the Izzy references in her review - up in my stories - and aptly mentioning the fact that the book was written in 2014, during which the IOF waged a war on Ga/za. This further implicates the author’s stance and Z10 alignment. ⚠️ Please remember that reading is, at its core, political. From what we choose to read to who gets published to what books are accessible to us to whose stories get told, we as readers are active participants in preserving the importance of books. We have a duty to resist any harmful narratives or ideologies held in them. I held this book dear, but it’s time to let it go - I will get over it. As I explain in the post, nothing is worth loving which implicitly harms a very real group of people and which perpetuates an ideology that is literally exterminating an entire population right this moment. The tv shows and movies that shaped me 🍿 I discovered so much of my favorite music - looking at One Tree Hill for introducing me to Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello, and Bon Iver!!! Almost Famous for Cat Stevens, Nick & Norah’s for Devandra Banhart, Breakfast at Tiffany’s for Moonriver, and Final Destination 3 for Ohio Players (iykyk 🫣) - and learned the most about my story preferences from these media I consumed in the first 18 years of my life. More than anything, they made me realize that all art takes Form by simply peeking into my being 💌 p.s.
