Admin reveal: For the past seven years I’ve been running @deepcreekvolunteers, an ad hoc volunteer group dedicated to keeping the popular nudist spot in the desert foothills known as Deep Creek Hot Springs looking beautiful. This has involved scrubbing algae, draining and siphoning the hot spring pools with pool hoses to remove built-up bacteria and debris, picking up all types of trash left behind, digging out pools when they’ve been filled with sand during flood events, and removing graffiti from boulders and rock formations in and around the hot spring pools. At times I’ve hiked out over 50 pounds of garbage, hiked in and out a portable pressure washer, and moved hundreds of pounds of sand from one place to another. I’ve had help from some great people over the years, and our group isn’t the only one that labors on behalf of the springs. Over time I’ve met the full spectrum of humanity at this very strange and complicated place. Situated along the Pacific Crest Trail and within reach of several major cities, these hot springs remain the most socially dynamic and diverse of any I’ve visited. I resisted the siren call of the decks for years, but this summer I finally caved. Forever grateful to @shanethomas and @sorbet.la for letting me make my debut in an LA space that’s open past 2am, not a warehouse, and has fun lighting.
