Up close and personal 🦟

Paper wasps chew wood fibers and mix them with their saliva to create a papery pulp — that’s how they build their intricate, open-celled nests.

Meet the Great Blue Skimmer (Libellula vibrans), a dragonfly that looks like it flew straight out of a sci-fi film. Males get their brilliant blue hue from a waxy coating called pruinescence, nature’s version of a powder finish.

I believe this is a female Two-spotted Flower Crab Spider (Thomisus daradioides). Thanks for spotting @geeny_o 🙏, she was special 😍

Crab spiders, particularly those of the genus *Thomisus*, possess a fascinating ability to change their color to blend in with their surroundings. This chameleon-like skill isn't instant and can take several days. The color change helps them camouflage themselves from both predators and prey. They typically shift between white, yellow, and pink hues to match the petals of the flowers they inhabit. This adaptation enhances their hunting efficiency by allowing them to ambush insects, such as bees and butterflies, that visit the flowers for nectar.

*Id species correction welcome 🙌

Crab spider disappears into the porcelain petals of a wax flower, waiting motionless for the next visitor to answer nature’s invitation.

The Black Soldier Fly is one of nature’s most efficient recyclers.

Its larvae can turn food scraps, manure, and organic waste into protein and compost in a matter of days, and reducing waste, smell, and even harmful bacteria.

A tiny crab spider hiding on a Wild Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) flower pedal.

In macro photography, magnification describes how large a subject is projected onto the camera sensor.

• 1× (1:1) magnification means the subject is recorded life-size on the sensor. If this spider is ~6 mm long, it also measures ~6 mm on the sensor.
• 2× (2:1) magnification means the subject is projected at twice its real size. That same 6 mm spider would occupy ~12 mm on the sensor.

Once you move beyond 1×, you’re entering high-magnification macro, where depth of field becomes razor thin and even the smallest movement matters. At these scales, a flower petal becomes a landscape and a tiny spider becomes a giant.

This guy was taken at 2x ~ all stacked images

Scientists observed jumping spiders entering a sleep state with REM-like eye movements, leg twitching, and body pulses which is similar to dreaming in humans and dogs.

Weevil Wednesday 🌱

A quiet architect of the miniature world, and armored in texture, carrying centuries of evolution on six deliberate steps.

That long curved rostrum isn’t just character, it’s a precision tool, built to drill, feed, and survive.

This little hunter carries 380 million years of history in its DNA.

Spiders were already walking the Earth long before dinosaurs existed. They survived mass extinctions, ice ages, shifting continents, and the asteroid that ended the reign of giants.

While entire species vanished, spiders adapted. Evolved. Refined.

Those eight eyes? Precision built over hundreds of millions of years.
That silk? Stronger than steel by weight.
That stare? Ancient.
Tiny. Silent. Timeless.

A living fossil, still thriving. 🕷️
