This one feels full circle.

In 2017, Vogue wrote about Godpower Pekipuma and the surf community of Tarkwa Bay. Godpower told them he learned to surf after seeing The Endless Summer as a kid.

Years later, I saw Nigeria written on an Endless Summer shirt. It made me wonder: there’s surfing in Nigeria? I went to Tarkwa Bay looking for a surf lesson — and Godpower became my instructor.

That meeting eventually became GODPOWER, our narrative short inspired by his life.

Bruce Brown Films, carrying the legacy of Bruce Brown and The Endless Summer, later came aboard as Executive Producers.

And now GODPOWER will open for The Birth of The Endless Summer at the Del Mar Surf Film Festival.

Godpower saw The Endless Summer and learned to surf.
I saw an Endless Summer shirt and found Godpower.
Now our film gets to share the screen with the story that helped start it all. Pretty damn special.

It started with a T-shirt.

I saw Nigeria listed as a surf location on an Endless Summer T-shirt, couldn’t get it out of my head, found GP Pekipuma on Instagram and booked a surf lesson. No research. I just went.

That random lesson became GODPOWER.

GP, his family and the Tarkwa Bay community wanted their story told and jumped in to help us make the film together.

Almost two years later, GODPOWER begins its Academy-qualifying theatrical run in Los Angeles.

We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a ways to go. Let’s see how far this wave goes. 🌊

Huge thanks to Dances With Films for believing in independent film and giving all of us this opportunity. 🙏

Thank you to everyone that joined the DWF team at our AMPAS shorts screening yesterday in Culver City! It was so wonderful to see our filmmakers again and hear what they have been up to since the festival while celebrating these six films that world premiered with us.
