The body is at rest, the model is sleeping, the painting is not. Using thick chunks of color to find points in space, the image emerges from the picture plane of the canvas.

Eva" (pencil on paper) was constructed by adding small pieces of paper to create the surface for the figure I was drawing. Starting at Eva's head, I added pieces of paper as I draw until the entire figure was finished.

Every layer of this portrait started as yesterday's news.

"Rachel Maddow," made from newsprint from The New York Times and acrylic. The college pieces are cut, placed, sealed, and the final work is coated twice more before it goes into the world. I use Golden matte medium, brushed on the underside of each collage piece first, then on top to secure the pieces of newspaper to the canvas.

The materials come from Maddow's world of politics. That's always the point.
