Big Girls Don’t Cry is in New Zealand cinemas today. Back in July I got to hang out with Aotearoa’s most swag director, @pollyhillxoxo. We talked small towns, queer awakenings, and cinematic whispers; @nic_sandflower took the beautiful photos at @hollywoodavondale for @sundaymag. Go see @biggirlsdontcry.xx on opening weekend; it’s so beautifully specific to New Zealand, especially those of us who were being gay, weird and annoying in coastal towns. You’ll laugh and cry and want to write your younger self a letter about how it’ll all be fine one day. (Song choice is for those who remember sweating in the back of your parents’ car on a 28-degree day in 2006 with More FM on the radio.) by @george_fenwick
Some lgbtq moments… by @george_fenwick
Cornpost. It’s the luminous, hilarious and infinitely wise @rachellydiab’s 31st which also means we have been friends for 10 years. from the moment we had that polite walk to pick up our access cards to the AUT radio studio, I have been blessed by your legendary friendship. There is no one else I would want to get trapped in a scrap metal recycling facility in Onehunga with, have a harrowing but then transcendent acid trip with, get my first tattoo from, stand outside my house and smile with, eat oranges through the years with. Genuinely never met anyone with a bigger heart; Rachel’s superpower is that she just cares about other people’s lives and their wellbeing so, so deeply. My Magita Perez… we love to laugh. Life is so fun with you!!!!!!! by @george_fenwick
get your fucking ass up and develop film. It seems like nobody wants to develop film these days by @george_fenwick
2025 b-sides! HNY 🫶 by @george_fenwick
hi! it feels dumb to post about work but i live in permanent fear that this will all fly out the window tomorrow and this seems like one way to delay that. My UK visa expired end of 2024 which i thought was a one way ticket to flopville but actually it’s been a huge year thanks to some hustling (and shameful air miles). Highlights include my third Cannes (and second outing of the tux for a sweaty screening of Mission Impossible 8); very spontaneously starting a job with @sundaymag in August and already getting to write profiles of some of Aotearoa’s best creatives; 3000 words on the 20th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain (a dream gig from @mitchellbeaupre & @ellakemp ); interviews & reviews for @mastermind.magazine (thank u forever @whatcaityfound & @jeremyolds); shouting about NZ film in The Guardian Australia; meeting Miranda Otto (and a furry) at Armageddon Palmerston North (lol); dream commissions from @anothermagazine; pushing through a biblical hangover to interview Dakota Johnson early on a Saturday morning; theee Melanie Lynskey; nerding out about dinosaurs with Gareth Edwards and Mahershala Ali; trying my hand at PR (which included press notes for the new Predator movie, and getting the queen @ives.music in Rolling Stone Aus); highlighting the great @indiaadonaldson on home soil; a dream-job stint at the best bookshop in the world @timeoutbookstore ; and OF COURSE being the most annoying guy on the streets of Auckland and waving the Letterboxd microphone at anyone who will speak to me, which I would not survive without @teddywrong.
