Today marks the end of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK. Being forced to slow down has given me plenty of time to think about the things we carry in secret and what ‘recovery’ actually means.

I just got the staples out from my second surgery in six months, this time to remove metalwork from my collarbone that’s been there since 2019. It follows an ACL reconstruction for an injury I’ve been navigating since 2022. If I'm honest, I’ve been on a vicious cycle of heavy injuries since I was 15, breaking bone after bone. Living and performing without a working ACL for the last four years created its own ‘elephant in the room’, a massive obstacle I tried my absolute hardest to ‘hide’ while training and performing.

Through relentless muscle conditioning, I managed to keep performing, including flips, fight choreography, and stunts. Even though I was physically limited, I took it as an opportunity to get extremely specific, master the finer details and focus on precision, control, and creativity in my characters, my fights, my movement, and my overall storytelling. I tried to look at it all as one big Berkoff exercise.

From the outside, it might look like I graduated drama school and fell off the radar. But on the inside, I’ve been completely dedicating myself to my craft, my body, and my longevity. I was so relentless with my pre-hab that I actually healed multiple meniscus tears and a medial separation myself, completely shocking my surgeon and allowing me to bear weight the second I woke up. While the quad graft means another year of strengthening and letting the ACL settle before returning to high-impact stunts and flips, I’m ahead of schedule and will be running again soon.

When you’re young, you think you’re invincible. Sometimes you do push when you’re tired and say ‘just one more trick’ until something snaps, usually on the small tricks. Other times, it's just pure bad luck, like landing a flip perfectly only to find an invisible dip in the ground and snapping your leg without even putting a hand down. Sometimes it’s completely out of your control, happening entirely against your will.
